You maybe in the wrong section I don’t think a mk1&2 had a 5 speed but there are different gear ratios for them and I think that some of the petrol gearboxes you couldn’t change the bell housing to fit them in a diesel

they only had 4 speed with overdrive , people would fit a type 9 usually when they fit a di

If I remember correctly, there are 3 different lengths of input shaft for the type 9 to suit different engines and bellhousings. The Transit type 9 with the side mounted shift was fitted to the Mk3 with the 2 litre petrol engine for a bit. This is the wrong input shaft for say a cologne V6. So if you decide to use one then you may have to change the input shaft to suit whatever engine and bellhousing you wish to use.

BGH, who rebuilt my type 9, don't like the type 9 being used in diesels as the lubrication requires higher revs to be effective. I know that there are many people that do not like the type 9 but having had the discussion with BGH, I would only use one with a petrol engine.

Is the bellhousing of a diesel type 9 from a Transit MK3 exchangable for a petrol bellhousing? Does the bellhousing fit from the 4-speed mk2 gearbox?

Petrol & diesel Type 9 bellhousings are interchangeable but the 4 speed one isnt as the 5 speed gearbox has a 3rd rail that needs a socket in the bellhousing

Thanks, then I will need a petrol bellhousing for my conversion. Are the pinto bellhousings for type 9 gearbox the same between Transit and car models? Also, will the speedometer cable of my MK2 Transit fit?

If you need one, then Ralph may be able to help you with a type 9 bellhousing, and if so then I will happily let him handle it as he is so very helpful to many on here.

But if no luck there then PM me as I have one spare at the back of the garage somewhere.

Good evening,
I also have type E box on Pinto 2.0 '81 and found type 9 g/b from mk3 diesel 2,5 '88 with very strange cage type bellhouse.
I understood bellhouse will not fit and is hard to find here in Lithuania.
Another option is MT75 from Scorpio g/b available to acquire here.
Will it be easier solution or it will require customisation - adapter plate, shaft, starter from the Transit MK3?

Has anyone attempted to convert a T9 2.8 V6 gearbox to fit a Transit, I have a Transit gearbox and a 2.8 V6 out of a Sierra sitting here, havent taken them apart yet but I will be moving over the Transit gear selector and what-not to the V6 box.

Also, the Transit box is of the heavy-duty type with the cover for the laygear bearing, does anyone know if it possible to machine the laygear of a standard T9 box to fit the HD bearing or do I need a new laygear if I want to take this route?
