Difficult starting

Postby knock-on » Tue Jun 11, 2024 2:31 pm

I read through the cold starting thread but couldn't find anything that seemed particular to my problem plus it is quite old now.

I have a Mk6 2005 2.0 Duratorq with 110k miles on the clock.

It was recently purchased and the previous owner has changed the glow-plugs recently. He also had a bleeder squeezer hard plumbed into the fuel filter for some reason, possible to try and cure this problem.

You have to use the starter for up to 10 times in bursts of 5 seconds before it grudgingly starts but once started for a few minutes it restarts like a dream. Indeed, sometimes the merest hint of starter motor and it bursts into life and never misses a beat but leave it overnight and back to square one.

I can encourage it to start a bit easier by turning the ignition on for 5 seconds without the starter motor and repeating 5 times but is this just pressurising the system?

Another thing, while it's churning the starter motor, there's a load of black smoke that smells to me like unburnt fuel so my thinking was could be injectors or low pressure on the pump but that's just a guess.

Any ideas?

turning ignition on for 5 seconds wont pressure the system as there'sno electric lift/fuel pump
Have you had fault codes read??
Slack worn timing chain can cause similar problems but best to get codes read

What our Andz327 said...no lift pumps in the diesel Mk6's and Euro-4 Mk7's.

You may also be suffering from air ingress, is the fuel filter still full after sitting overnight..??

Thanks, will check that as well. I have an electrical connection lead to connect but is there a piece of software I should download to read it?

Forscan is what you're after.. https://forscan.org/download.html

What cable do you have..?? Not all of them are compatible with Forscan or the Mk6's. Forscan has a couple of "recommended" cables which are compatible with EOBD and OBD-II.

Small update. After priming the fuel filter and bleeding the system again it looks like the fuel filter isn't locating correctly in the housing and the securing lock doesn't click into place. It's possible this is drawing air into the system so bought a genuine Bosch filter from Eurocarparts.

Only problem is it doesn't fit?

Part number comes up ok F026402088 but it has a large notch on one side of the top and 3 smaller notches on the other side. It only slides on half way?

Am I missing something stupid?

Still having an issue with this van not starting from cold.

Had a mechanic round that has checked there is no leak at the fuel filter and code says there is a fuel pump error.

Apparently air is getting into the system and the mechanic thinks its the fuel pump but a new one is £700.

Has anyone come up with this problem before and is there an alternative to changing the whole pump. The mechanic seems to know his stuff but it's always worth asking another opinion.

To recap, very difficult starting from cold and a lot of smoke / unburnt fuel on starting. Once warm it's fine until it's cold again and then the same problem.
