Gearbox / Clutch / DMF / Bearing Noise??

Postby JayAce777 » Tue May 07, 2024 2:44 pm

Hi all you knowledgeable Transit experts….

I’ve got a weird noise on my 2012 Transit 2.2 RWD 6-Speed!

From cold until driven a short distance usually nothing at all, then it will start to make noise when in neutral and clutch down. Noise goes away or quietens 95% if I then select a gear (obviously with clutch still down).

It’s a dry noise, kinda like a slow whirring/honking/bearing noise. A little bit grindy and a little bit like a bearing is dry/vibrating. I’ve just replaced gearbox oil and that’s not made a difference, no significant swarf on plug. The noise kinda rattles through the van and very noticeable from outside. Doesn’t happen all the time either which is annoying, just now I pulled up and sat with foot on clutch/neutral and it was silent, rev it up though and the noise starts again.

Front of engine is quiet (pulleys etc), 99% certain it’s gearbox area.

Any clues/ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like your clutch release bearing or spigot bearing is failing....box out job for either unfortunately.

Knobby does teh ASM box have these bearings too? - I'm starting to wonder if this is the cause of my clutch woes which become apparent after its had a 24hr rest.

Yes they do...the ASM is just a normal manual gearbox with a normal clutch...with all the ASM gubbins bolted onto it..

Do you know how many miles the original clutch has done..?? Might be prudent to just replace the lot since you have the box out and if it has a decent amount of miles on it.

Just realised I have same problem
I’m deaf but was told my van is making this noise the op described , it’s hell when you can’t hear ,
I’ve already lost a turbo cos I never heard it whistling ,
just wanted to ask how safe is it to ride in this condition, I need to make a short trip hoping it holds out ,
And what’s the price range to get it sorted doing the bits and pieces mentioned clutch, spigot engine seal is there any other suprise bits ? Thanks

You've not told us what model Transit you have..?? Mk6 or Mk7..?? FWD or RWD..?? 5 or 6 speed..??

Hi there mate
Then you know how frustrating it can be , it’s not a problem till it is when you can’t hear it haha
I have a 2012 l3h3 2.2 6spd rwd
My friend says it sounds bad , so I went to mechanic he says bearing without even driving it ..
go to gearbox specialist he is on holiday for 2wks ..
not sure if it’s okay to drive it drives fine ..
Don’t want to make it even costlier by driving ? But need to go on a 3hr trip and 3back ,
Thanks for replying

Not the foggiest mate. The van is on about 130k miles now, no slipping, just that almight thud and a strong jolt forwards when I slightly touch the accelerator. Then it eases off - usually.

Just lately it's been struggling to drop down gears and so i get the gear grinding.. then it goes back to normal and is fine (mostly) for the rest of the day.

Forscan says hydraulic fluid is faulty, also said the bonnet and door switches are shot (yet on the live screen can see them opening and closing) and it had error codes for low hydro fluid and a leak (along with clutch position etc etc). Reset the lot, topped up fluid, next day (yesterday) good as gold. Today it's playing up again and there is no fluid loss or error codes at all - it just picked up a power train fault for the timing solenoid (only a possibly fault it pointed out) and the door / bonnet switches - even though it can see them opening and closing.

It's all rather odd. I reckon it's got air in the clutch actuator that then moves out of the way somehow.

Had another diagnosis.. this guy says it can’t be the gearbox bearing if it’s making a noise at such low speeds .. says clutch problem ( bearing) or prop shaft
Getting another look this evening.. then will go from there, hoping they not all 3 different opinions..
