I used to have access to a Ford diag tool a couple of years back and could check if my tourneo software was up to date.
Is there any way other than paying ford a few hundred quid to see if any modules have updates available?

Not any longer...Ford have essentially made it near impossible for mere mortals like us to have access to ETIS and the required files these days. You must be a dealer or a Ford approved mechanical shop.
