MK4 2.5TD help needed please

Postby Transitpascall » Fri Nov 08, 2024 10:17 am

1994 2.5td can anyone help?
It's running lumpy when cold but starts perfectly but once warmed it keeps breaking down, it feels like I'm constantly running out of fuel because it feels like it's missing and losing power then judders to a stop and is a git to restart and will only run if I have foot flat on acceleration and only for a minute or two but once cooled it starts easily again.I've replaced the filter and cleaned the tank but now it's worse

Have you checked the tank vent is free, I had a blockage on mine and the fuel pump overheated and was very unhappy. It wasn't as bad as yours, but the idle was very low when it was hot. If tank not venting it builds a vacuum and the pump has to work very hard. Also needs excess fuel to cool which it doesn't get. Try running the van with fuel cap removed and see if it fixes it.

Do you mean the little cheap pump or the big expensive epic injection pump could be knackered?
I've ordered a little cheap fuel lift pump thing just incase

Worth a try for sure, could be the lift pump. Check the pump vent as well. Hopefully your epic is OK as they are hard to get.

If I run it until it starts cutting out will removing the fuel cap test the vent? If it runs ok with fuel cap off then it's venting through the cap proving the vent pipe is blocked?
Or is there another way to clear or test the pipe

Yes if your vent is blocked then removing fuel cap releases the pressure and it should run again fine. This isn't a fix, just a test. The tank has a one-way valve that can get stuck closed, or the pipes can get clogged. It can be easily fixed if this is your issue

If the vent is blocked there's a vacuum in the tank and the cap will be difficult to remove you will here the air rush in.
