Gearbox 88VT

Postby FDN850HU » Sat Jan 11, 2025 1:47 pm

Dear members, i would like to be sure whether i have a mt75 gearbox or not. Its a 96 2.5di bus, and 88vt is written on the housing. I presume it is indeed a mt75 since i have 5 gears and its manual. Could you please help me out? If so, the quantity of 1.25 litres is still valid? (Although filled till fill hole is flush with the oil) . Many thanks!

I was hoping that someone more knowledgeable would answer, but I can tell you that you do have an MT75 gearbox, I don't know the capacity except that you fill it until oil comes back out of the filler plug hole.
The correct oil is actually called 'MT75 oil', but I don't know if what you have there is a valid substitute :?

Hopefully, someone else will chip in with an answer

in the picture above of the oil bottle - it has GL4 on it which is a step in the right direction, GL5 is to be avoided as it dissolves and damages yellow metal ..which your box contains.

lots of searches on google containing the words 88vt and mt75 ...bring them up together as one and the same .

according to a search on the comma oil site this is the one as recommended for: Transit 2.5 Di (1995-1998)

https://app.commaoil.com/commercial-veh ... /view/550#

which isnt a strait oil as first recommended to you above in the pic of oil bottle -- this is MVMTF Plus 75W-90

This is a multigrade gear-oil .indicated by the two numbers 75w90..will will be a a different thickness according to temperature, that helps save wear on the gearbox -- also fully synthetic ..which is also a plus.

all the best.mark

Definately an MT75

The MVMTF plus is Comma's "new" oil that covers multiple gearboxes and can be used.

Here is a couple of the correct MT75 Oils

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185901965444 ... BM3ryM-otl

and yes you will want about 1.25L
Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto

Refresh - filled up 21829 febi and it works fine, smoother than before. Old was dark and originally red i guess. Febi 21829 is yellow in colour. Although gonna try ravenöl 75w90 since they mention mt75 in the description. Cheers

Just a note added to gearbox oil question, ravenöl oil did not work as good as i wanted, now my gearbox has kroon sp 1031 in it, this is red in colour (other two were yellow) and looks thinner as well, it shifts way much smoother now like it should in my opinion. This kroon sp1031 is especially for mt75 gears.
