Advice on 06 transit H9FB

Postby Curious wheels » Thu Apr 17, 2025 3:31 am

Hey everyone. Potential first time transit buyer here. I'm looking at a 2006 Transit. 1 owner since new and full service history. No rust. Has done 220 thousand kms. H9FB engine. Does anyone have any experience owning or working on this model? Please share your views good and bad. Thank you!

Hi. I'm assuming (& if I'm wrong, then no doubt someone will correct me) that this is a 2.4 RWD Transit? May have the numbers T330 135 on the doors below the quarter windows...or something similar and TDCI on the radiator grille. (if it's a Mk7 Transit then don't bother looking for the numbers...they're not there  )

If so, then this is the common rail injection engine. I have one and am really pleased with it, but have been advised that they can have a fragile fuel system. Any neglect can prove to be expensive to rectify. Ensure a strong service history and genuine Ford fuel filter fitted. The mileage on it's own is less of a worry if it's been motorway cruising rather than hard work or town driving. So long as the oil has been changed frequently and the correct oil used.

If it's a TDDI engine, then it's less powerful but more robust, but proper maintenance is always the key. If looked after, these vans are strong...neglect at your peril.

If it is rust free (and you're lucky if it is) then use cavity wax in the sills to protect (Ford didn't pay much attention to this). Easy to do with a probe inserted into the drain holes along the sills. Also in the multitude of machined holes in the chassis.

The clutch operation should be smooth. Dual mass systems can vibrate when worn and consider the cost of replacing it. If it is a 6 speed rear wheel drive, then the slave cylinder in inside the bell housing (gearbox out to replace) so check for fluid leaks underneath.

Hope this is of some help...but lots of knowledge on this site (much more than mine)

H9FB is the Mk6 135 TDCi....run man...run fast, run far.

They're well known to have a fragile fuel system...but some people sware by them, when running well they are very good.

It's the T350 model. Face-lift with gear stick on the dashboard. So mk7 I think?

Gear lever on the dash is a Mk7 (with added electrics in the engine control  ).

Lord Knobrot is one of the most respected members of the forum, with acres of knowledge. I can only say that my 2.4 135bhp Mk6 is running well and I love it...but I am mindful of the reputation of the fuel system on this version. So long as you understand and accept the potential for expensive repairs if it goes wrong (I didn't, and may not have chosen this van if I did, but have it now and it cruises very well). Look after the fuel system with a genuine filter and never buy crap fuel or let it run empty.

The Mk7 has more complex control of things like the EGR (which was easy to blank off on my Mk6).

Is there a good history with the van? Has it been maintained properly?

If that's the case...the 2.4 140 engine is a good one, probably the best of the lot...I may have been wrong with it being a Mk6, thinking about it now the H9FA is the Mk6, misread it  I blame dimentia.

Thank you both heaps for your advice! Much appreciated! I'm going to go for the van. It seems to be in very good condition. I'll follow your advice about the cavity wax. Thinking I'll paint it in Raptor at some stage to make it more rust proof. Any thing you would recommend doing straight away to the van ? Or checking? I read somewhere about deleting the EGR? Is this worth doing? I'm in New Zealand by the way. Think I will try to find a Ford Transit specialist somewhere in Auckland for all work that may be required going forwards.

2006 ..and cavity wax ..don't go together if its rusted and at some time you have to weld it ..will be a nightmare.

have a good look at the pinch welds along the bottom of the sills ...maybe inspect inside sills with a boroscope .

all the best.mark
