Ebay engine price scam or have things changed?

Postby blown up engine » Sat May 17, 2025 7:07 pm

Hi kate here,

My engine left the building last week and fell down the stairs and went to 3 cylinders, it died shortly after RIP. We started looking on ebay for remanufactured engines, found one at £1650. full rebuild so on. thought nothing of it, my mechanic went to order the engine, called me and said he wants £300 in vat and £90 for postage!!!! and it stated free postage!

Now I was an ebay seller for 6 years. When I listed an item for a price, it sold at that price if it was a buy it now, nothing added on. So has something changed? I also noticed the seller wants you to ring. I see this as a scam but what do you think?
Hospital is my second home lol and now the engine has blown, me and ford were made for each other!

Always be careful!

What is their feedback like?

Do they have a unit or premises?

How long have they traded for ?

Always a risk and good to be cautious..

You have probably considered all of the above anyway.

Id be disappointed myself if extra charges were added or not made transparent.

Does the seller know your desperate for the engine? Perhaps thats given them the opportunity to take the mick knowing you cant wait around ? I may be totally wrong.

Link up the engine, we can have a look.

Cheers

They have been at it since 1948 apparently.

It says free collection, couldn’t see anything about free delivery?

It does say plus vat in the description.

Feedback all positive.

Id be a little more assured they have numbers available to call

Still, do your own research and be mindful.

On face value, looks ok ?

Probably fine, they have stated vat on top in description.

1948 is a long time ago lol. Must be doing something right.

But, if in doubt…

Keep us posted on your progress and hope you get back on road soon.

What i thought lol, many years that.

I can handle the engine blowing up as the van has been designed to sit but what i can't handle is the crap internet here in the town as i am struggling to watch bsb and wsbk this weekend, its torture lol

yeah will do as we have to find out why it killed the engine.

Unfortunately the euro 5 machines have a reputation of overfueling with stuck open injectors. Your mechanic will im sure investigate this.

Both my vans are euro 4 without accident, the denso systems tend to be less problematic. But we still have issues.

Well he's had that eBay account since 2018. Feedback is all positive (but only 9 items). It does say collection only. Don't know how much it would cost to package and ship an engine. Probably not far off the price you were quoted. One thing with eBay now though is that they list the VAT when you pay, but if you look closely it will be included in the price you were quoted. I guess that if you're a business that doesn't pay VAT then you could claim it back. Ebay now also charge a buyer protection fee rather than charge the seller commission, but again this should be included in the price you see.
