Mk1 Fuse box issues

Postby Mikexx » Sun May 18, 2025 1:44 am

The fuse box uses the bullet style fuse that are awful. The springs don't provide much force and connections will randomly fail.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem, or an alternative fuse box?

Back in the day if I had any fuse problems due to corrosion on the fuse to spring contact I’d change all the fuses at once after cleaning the contracts with contact cleaner because you always find it you’d knock another one and it would play up ,the same with the mk2 .
As for changing the fuse box you could get a after market blade fuse box but that would mean cutting the original plug’s off I’d only do this as a last resort if the spring fuse holder was to weak I used to bend them to tighten them up after cleaning and they would be ok.

I thought I'd add details of the fuse box conversion. I got a tool to remove the spade connectors from the bodies. Some were very brittle and broke. So had to replace some new spade connectors. I was able to clamp the new spades onto the stub of the old spade to save faffing about where two cables were put into one spade.

The old fuse (box)

I got the housing from Amazon and it's pretty substantive and heavier than I thought I was getting for the price

All cables were individually labelled. This is essential! Don't skip this step!

Since there are multiple connections that are combined:

Connections were made underneath the new fusebox

Because there are fuse positions with multiple posts there needed to be some rearranging this meant some of the fuses were moved along such that 11 of the 12 positions were finally used:

The fuse box is longer and had to be lower than the old, but that does give better access.

The important proof of the pudding is that the electrics now all work. Well, apart from cleaning tail light lamp holders.
