Adding central locking button to sliding door

Postby Glossevans » Sun Jul 23, 2023 5:35 pm

Hi all.

Just joined the forum to ask a question relating to the sliding door and central locking controls.

We have a 14 plate Transit Custom that has been converted from a van to a campervan.
We have one sliding door, 2 rear door and the driver and passenger doors.
The driver and passenger doors have buttons to lock and unlock the central locking, but none of the rear doors have these controls.

Has anyone successfully added a set of central locking buttons to the sliding door?
Perhaps from the Transit Tourneo (don't know if these have central locking buttons in the rear somewhere)?

The reason I'd like to have this is that at the end of the day, when we're locking up for the night, we have to stretch forward in to the 'cab' and lock the van using the buttons on either passenger or drivers door.
It would be a lot easier if we could use a set of buttons on the sliding door.
Using the key fob to lock the doors isn't an option as this would also set the alarm and we' run the risk of triggering the alarm with movements during the night - unless someone can tell me a way to lock the van using the key fob that doesn't set the motion detectors.

Thanks in advance for help / advice.

Hi yes it is possible I did it on our 2018 Custom, I got a door switch and a door harness from a breakers for around £25 and put the switch in the plastic trim just in front of the sliding door and used the switch wire off the harness and tapped into the switch wires in the door harness in the A pillar.

Hi, I dont suppose you have any photos of this?

Did you get the door switch and harness for a front passenger door?
and how did you work out which wires in the A pillar to tap into?

Thanks for any assistance, I have been trying to find out if there was already a solution in a Torneo as I am sure I have seen a Taxi with door switches on rear sliding door - but I have never got anywhere with it.

Regards,

Sid.

Hey (firstly apologies if this response appears twice - I think the first attempt may have got lost in the new members first post gets reviewed process which I admit I missed)...

Do you have any pics of this setup?
Could you confirm you got the switch and harness for a front passenger door, and how did you figure out which A pillar wires to tap into?

Cheers,

Sid.

Hi,
The plug for the door switch best way I can describe connections is say from the left 1st pin is number 1 then 2,3,4.
You will need to disconnect the passenger door harness in the A pillar and the pins in this are numbered so I connected switch as follows Pin 1 goes to A2 which is on the top row pin 2 to B7 on bottom row pin 3 to B12 pin 4 to B6.
The white connector is in the passenger door this is the harness I brought from the breakers to cut off and to use the switch wires and plug and the wires you can see have been cut are the ones listed above. Not sure if the connections are the same pins for your van but these can easily be checked with a multimeter I’m sure the harness I got was from a 2013/14 van.
Hope this helps you it certainly makes locking the van so much easier.
Regards
Stuart.

It's a lot easier to just make sure the van ignition key is to hand as it will lock with the keys inside the van. Well mine does. If you have coonverted it to a camper then there musst be a flat surface somewhere to hand on which you can leve the keys. It's a good idea for safety to have the keys nearby in case a nearby caravan/motorhome catches fire.

Thanks for your input, but it doesnt really help. If I am going to be IN the van to push the button then the fact that it will lock with the keys in there is kind of irrelevant. The reason for wanting to do it with a button comes down to the way the alarms are set.. If I lock with the keyfob then it arms the door alarms, and so just pulling the inside handle on the slide door, not only opens the door, but also sets the alarm off. If i lock it from inside with the button on the driver/passenger door, then pulling the slide door handle opens the door, but does not trigger the alarm. As a camper I frequently lock the whole van, and then only unlock the rear with the keyfob, so that the front remains locked.

Anyway, I have now received a front passenger switch and promptly taken it apart. The good news is that the switch has 4 simple contacts and isnt can bus attached - ie its just a pair of push to make switches, and an LED circuit - there is no "data" sent to identify itself - which I had suspected when Stu said he tapped into the front door loom.. This opens up the option of me not using the button set that I have, and using a single push switch as a lock button which might make life easier, and give me the option of iluminating it only when the low level neons I have are lit.

Did you get this sorted OK. We have a 2022 Transit based motorhome and the habitation door is key operated - not the one used for the cab!! I can buy a 3rd party actuactor but would like to link it to the van system. Any help/advice you could give would be most welcome. Thanks

Hi

I am about to do the same thing and if you still have the message you sent before - and it contains different info - please could you forward it to me?

Am I right in thinking you had a "manual" door and wanted it to lock/unlock with the remote? I have a motorhome and want to automate the non-Ford habitation door so dont think I need the bits you bought, or do I? Do I just need to connect the wires from the door to the white connector in the A pillar??

Do you know what the 4 wires are for? I would have thought only 2 wires (if voltage is reversed for lock/unlock) or 3 wires if one is lock and the other unlock - plus a ground of course.

Any hints/tips you could give would be most appreciated

Thanks

PS I think I have found a suitable door lock actuator on the web.

Thank you, as this was one of my questions as well.
I'm in the process of building one myself.

Now I have to look for the same, but for the windows, and place all the controls together with the lights, step and so on.

Cheers
