Full beam when switched to main beam??

Postby Naylz29 » Fri Jun 06, 2025 5:55 pm

So I have my MOT this Wednesday, had a check over the van today and discovered when I switch to main beam the headlamps come on as full beam along with the blue full beam light in the dash, I cannot get the fog light to come on either. Now side lights work fine as do indicators and stop/ tail lights. I cannot also flash the full beam off the stalk too. So can’t understand how or why full beam comes on from the switch, it’s not even an option on the switch???

I am going to check fuses, bulbs and most likely replace the relays.

Does anyone know why full beam is coming on? Is it some kind of fail safe if main beams don’t work???
PS it’s a Mk6 2004 Transit chassis cab RWD Motorhome, only has rear fog light.
Thanks in advance

I've not had this problem but it sounds like a failure of the headlamp stalk unit. If it's jammed on main beam and you cannot flash (I'm guessing you mean when the lights are switched off and you pull the stalk back to flash main beam).

When you turn the rotary headlamp switch to the headlamp-on position it will power up through the stalk unit and either illuminate dipped beam or main beam depending on the position of the stalk. If the stalk is stuck on main beam then the dipped lights will never work.

Not sure about the fog lamp (do you mean front or rear fogs?). Is the warning lamp on the switch coming on when you pull the switch out? If it is, then maybe it's just the bulb that's failed...as per previous suggestion.

Hi sorry, just to be clear…seems predictive text mislead, I can flash full beam on the stalk when no lights are on using the switch.

But you have made me wonder there, I guess if the stalk as you say is stuck in full beam select on, then when I chose main beam on the switch it would go straight full beam…..think you are on to something here….i will report back tomorrow.thanks
