2008 ..long time ..and i have found myself the inboard driveshafts joints lubricating grease can dry up in that time ..if so you may be looking at lots of wear on it along with the tripod.

It had new tyres at 58,000, and new front wheel bearings, discs, pads at 73,316 miles.

Just had front wheels rebalanced as first step in this investigation. No significant change.

The vibration comes in at 65 mph (5th gear) and by 70 mph it is getting intolerable. There is no steering wheel shake. There are no clunks at full left or right lock.

I will be looking at driveshaft bearings. But welcome any comment/suggestions.

Thanks

Won't be driveshaft bearing
Have you balanced rear wheels ??

Thanks for last post btw.
Am pretty certain its front based vibration.

Anyway, am fitting new driveshafts. Started on off side , cannot get the old shaft out of the diff. Brute force has caused the tripod joint to come apart - lots of gloop. I cannot see anything much to lever against.
There is no circlip force to overcome. I'll have a good search on techniques on here. I should point out that the support bearing is free to move off the block.

Again, any suggestions welcome

Others have made a right mess of the webs of the gearbox trying to get these things out ,, i used a
vintage tyre lever, driven in like A a wedge with small taps of a hammer..i had a collection of these so i got to choose the exact one that worked.

This one did it

What you have got in there on the end of the shaft is a retaining ring that likes to hang down like a bulls nose ring ..its open at one end and sometimes you can rotate 180 degrees and get it to hang down in a different way so drive shaft comes out easily.

Thanks Mark.
I have quite a few vintage Dunlop tyre levers to hand. I was going to get under there and try rotating the shaft to see if there is an easy release spot. Your bulls ring idea makes sense. I will let you guys know how I get on. Funny that the Haynes manual doesn't mention this!

Tried 30 degrees rotation. Gave it a light tap with club hammer on tripod casing and it moved. Carried on and it was out. Thanks for your advice.

Is the back axle parralel to the front?
Bent chassis. Tyres on/worn evenly. Worn spring hangers, bushes.
Camber on suspension dampers etc.
On level ground does the van sit level/square/look right?
Does it look crabby, out of line, one side or corner down?
Is it easy turning/going left or right?
Sometimes can see if a van is crabbing by following it watching how it goes.
Vibration in the steering wheel - likely the problem is from the front.
Vibration/shifting felt on your bottom - likely the problem is from the back.

Vibration/hertz can manifest at certain speeds/rpm.

I have now tested following fitting new driveshafts. They have made little improvement. But the amplitude of vibration (at wheel frequency) at 65 mph is reduced. The most severe vibration occurs at 70 to 72 mph.

Having experienced that, my next investigation is going to be the rears. The tyres are OE so are 17 and a bit years old.

I will report back when these have been looked at

17 year old tyres - low mileage for 2008 ..that just about says it all .. stood for long periods creating flat spots on the tyres.

I agree...if the tyres are 17 years old, I wouldn't want to do 70mph on them
