Just purchased a mk6 looking for advice

Postby trannynick » Sat Jul 05, 2025 1:23 pm

Afternoon. Having just sold my mk5 transit camper i have purchased a mk6 camper, did toy with the idea of buying a puegeot but dont like the chocolate gearboxes all of them seemed to have gearbox issues, anyhow this mk6 popped up at a good price and i bought it, it looks like an xlwb with extended chassis or something, i havent seen it in the flesh yet but ive paid a deposit. The reg is AY54FRU and car checks dont give much info on specific detail or power. Its got a kentucky royal body on the back, im just looking for some more info if possible regarding what power output it will have or where i can do some homework on it. Cant find much onine but i may be looking in wrong place. My mk5 was great for the 2 years i owned it, i hope this mk6 will be just as good and as reliable. any help is appreciated and thanks alot. Nick.

Mk6 XLWB will be a Jumbo, RWD with 2.4 engine...could be TDDi or TDCi. TDDi comes in 75, 90, 115, 120 and 125 ps engines....TDCi only comes in 135PS...hopefully it's not that one.

Looking at the MOT history (available on gov.com) I think this is a 135bhp engine (same as mine). If I'm right, this means it is a TDCI and probably comes with a 6 speed gearbox. Lord Knobrot will be shuddering and suggesting you run for the hills as this is the troublesome one! So far I've been fortunate with mine (touch wood) but the fuel system is fragile. Always use a genuine Ford fuel filter and always buy fuel from a big station that sells a lot of fuel.

The history shows some corrosion (hardly surprising at this age) but check this out carefully. Also if it is the 6 speed, remember the slave cylinder is in the bell housing and needs a gearbox removal to change. Check for a leak under the bell housing. The rear main on the engine often weeps, so don't confuse this with brake fluid from the clutch.

There is also mention of propshaft support play (not such a big job) and front brake discs...bit of a pain to change.

Download forscan (free) and run a diagnostic to check for any DTC's

Personally, I love mine and find it has plenty of torque for climbing hill and cruising in a relaxed manner (nobody is in a hurry in a camper 8) ). Even gets reasonable mpg. I would feel less comfortable without the help and support from the great guys on here though.

Thanks or the information guys. As t350camper posted, the only thing alluding to its power spec is what an mot tester has put when hes been testing it, but in my experience they can be way off the mark, ive had a 2.0 car that was down as a 2.5 on the mot details and they had my mk5 van as emitting too much smoke for a turbocharged engine however it was 2.5di from factory. However that is the only scrap of info pointing to which injection system it has fitted, will find out as soon as bonnet is opened, plus side it may have the 6 speed box, strange i cant find anything else on it, its not an import, even when i paid for a full car check, all the info on spec was UNKNOWN - Anyway thanks for the advice im sure i will be back sooner rather than later. :?

If it is a 6 speed...it will be the horrible 135 TDCi...good luck with that.

No real advantage to having a 6 speed, 1st gear is only good for climbing trees and the 6th gear is near identical ratio to the 5th gear in the 5 speed. You will however have the better Dana rear axle...more ratios available in them.

If it’s a 135 tdci make sure it’s got the genuine Ford tdci fuel filter you’re mot history shows it’s very low mileage my 135 had 156.000 miles on it when I sold it and I never had any fuel problems I must admit I joined the forum just after getting it and after reading the posts on it I was very worried but for me it was the best engined transit I’ve had good mpg and power.
A courier who used to deliver to my work place his did have the pump go and take out the injectors but at over 200.000 miles .

I would never disagree with Knobby (his knowledge is vast) but so far I have been lucky with my low mileage camper (6 speed 135bhp). I also bought it before joining the forum as I hadn't actually been looking for a Ford and my research into the VW I went to buy became obsolete when the van turned out to be rubbish...but they had this absolutely mint Transit on the lot...and the rest is history.

Having said that...the engine pulls like a train and returns good mpg...I love the van, so I'm just going to run the risk and keep up the maintenance. Yes, 1st gear on the 6 speed is best suited to towing out tree stumps, but when you need to do a hill start in the Lake District on a 1 in 4 hill, then you're thankful for it.

I also found that blanking off the EGR made a huge difference in exhaust emissions and smoothness of operation.

Good luck 8)
