2016 Transit 2.2 RWD low on power.

Postby Ekan_de » Wed Sep 03, 2025 8:21 am

Hey all! first post here. I have looked around the forum a bit and i an a bit lost on where to start.

Issue: Transit 2016 2.2 rwd is low on power until ~2500 rpms. Has bad fuel economy(random). Turbo spool sound when driving on the highway in constant speed.

It started with the bad fuel economy, or that was how i was realinsing something is off.
Typical i get a fuel economy of 9,5L on 100kms.
Next day it can be 11 on 100 kms.
Next day again it can be 83 on the same distance.

The van is my everyday driver and i drive the same roads every day to and home from work.
When im driving on the highway i can hear how the turbo spools up and down even thou im not changing the accelerator at all. the road can be perfectly straight and still it changes

Then there is the low power. the van should have 155hp and i atleast think it should be a lot snappier then it is. I had a sprinter with 183hp in that was a total ferrari in comparison to this van.
Down low in the rps it is really slow and accelerating on second when its just a little upwards is a nightmare.

There is no faultcodes whatever.
I have checked the turbo hoses since i thought that was what was making the whistling sound to no success.
Replaced the coldside to the intake since thast hose almost had a hole in it from rubbing on the chassis.
Didnt help at all.

Is this a possible egr problem? Shouldnt there be a code if the valve was stuck open or closed?
Im grateful for any ideas on where i should start.

So everyone understands
9.5 litres per 100km to mpg = 29.73 mpg
11 litres per 100km to mpg = 25.68 mpg
Next day again it can be 83 on the same distance.= I don't understand what that statement means.
Your litres per km depends on driving conditions .. short journeys with stops will return less mpg than long journeys without stops, also using the AC will make it use more fuel

You must have good hearing. i cant hear my turbo Spooling ..that's my 1.8 connect though.

if you have forscan you would have more info than just fault codes.

as regards reading codes

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper DETAILED explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading, or doesn't work (or we on the forum are unfamiliar with it)_you can see a lot more with forscan. like live running data etc of all systems, everything .. ABS signals, EGR open percentages, pressures, temperatures , graphs

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable, you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

Thank you for the answer.
83 should ofcourse be 8.3 liters/100km. Just a typo. :)

The numbers im writing here is when really trying to get as low consumption as possible.
Its the same roads every day going to and from work. Van is unloaded on weekdays as i use it as a motovan on weekends. I do understand that the fueleconomy can change a little from 1 day to another depending on weather, ac being used and such but the difference feels to big.

The turbo sound i hear when going on the freeway is going up and down in pitch.
This is usually when going on absolute straight road and it feels like the van cant decide if it needs boost or not. This soound ofcourse also comes when using the accelerator more heavy but i guess the sound should be there then. Took the inletpipe of the turbo and checked the turbine for play but couldnt really feel any play at all.

Will try to take a video and see if i can get the sound on the recording.
I will make sure to get forscan and order a cable.

Does anyone have the 2.2 Cargovan (long) and numbers on their fuel economy?

85 is 33mpg

After doing a search in the mk8 forum and looking at 2.2 fuel consumption... your figures are the mostly the same as what most are getting ... one states an average over whole year is 25mpg - which is your 11 litres per 100km, some state occasional 33 mpg on long runs which is your 8.5 per 100km.

You can do the search here yourself here - search.php

i just put in:- mpg 2.2 and searched the mk8 forum

Not much talk here of kilometres per litre

Google search, this phrase .. puts a handy converter right up the top of the results, where you can adjust things back and forth mpg kml ....all sorts

litres per 100 km to mpg

https://www.google.com/search?q=litres+ ... +km+to+mpg

hopefully you'll find out why its sluggish, when you put the forscan data up.

or you can post in the mk8 forum with title "2.2 fuel consumption please"

some who have campers etc .. and are way down on your figures ... bare that in mind.
