Tickover for a few mins then dies.

Postby RogoWales » Wed Sep 17, 2025 6:12 am

Ok Hi everyone.
I recently bought a 2013 Mk7 2.2 transit and apart from what feels like the bottom engine dog n bone mount all seemed fine, after taking out for a few times i did hear what sounds like a hissing as i was accelerating but it didn't affect the drive at all. I went out recenly and 50yards after driving off it tried to cut out then went back to normal and i thought maybe because it was cold or i started it too quick and not waited for the dash lights to go out but anyway for that drive of a few miles it was fine. I left it for a few days and went to go our again but now it starts easily and ticks over but as soon as i touch the throttle like a lot of others in here is dies straight away. If i leave it on tickover it last a few minutes and then dies and will start again and remain on tickover. If i very slowly try to increase the throttle i might get another 200 rpm out of it but then it dies. Very occasionally if you go crazy with pumping the throttle when starting it might allow a rough few revs but comes with a hissing noise and then cuts out. Its my first time with a transit so i am not sure if its normal but i cant figure out if its coming on prior to cutting out or becuase its cutting out but the traction control light comes on first when when it dies. Any help appreciated as the seller/trader is saying i only need to change the fuel filter. Just trying to get as much info as i can before tackling this problem so thanks in advance.

Hissing noise will probably be a split boost pipe, intercooler or inlet manifold....reasonably common. Pumping the throttle does nothing...they're a "fly-by-wire" electronic pedal....no cables.

Have you checked the throttle body on the inlet manifold for sticking throttle plate etc...

Possible DPF issue..??

What fault codes are you getting..??

I would definitely try a fuel filter on it, probably hasn't been changed for years

Fuel restriction or poor electical contact or damaged wires.
Partially blocked DPF - DPF soot not reset. Blocked vapourisor, heater not working.
Hole in inlet system, partially blocked inlet system.
The ESP and Traction control light are the same - a skiding car.
They both use the speed sensors on each wheel which the ABS also uses.
Sometimes the phonic wheel gets covered in mud.

50yards after driving off it tried to cut out then went back to normal -poor electrical contact. Fuel system intermittent restriction.

tickover it last a few minutes and then dies and will start again and remain on tickover. Intermittent fuel restriction.

a hissing noise and then cuts out - increasing split in inlet system.

You need to get a decent reader onto it...most of them can't cope with the Transit protocols and modules. You don't have to have a fault light on to have fault codes stored.

Forscan is your friend.

Well done the fuel filter and yes i cant bleed it to get it going, i was told the housings are buggars for letting air in is this correct.
I have tried the ignition on off and used a pipe on the tyre valve to drain down into a bucket with the actual valve insert out and then finally re-inserted the valve and pressed it to get any remaining air out. But no start now after fuel filter change.

I also must add whilst looking around i found my intercooler bottom pipe has a finger sized hole in it so i am hoping that is what is causing the hissing noise at higher revs. Also all earth points are good.

2013 Mk7 2.2 - FWD or RWD?

RWD - The to and from fuel pipes at the filter are above the filter and above the top of the schrader valve.
From your description of bleeding - the fuel has drained out of the to pipe = air in the system likely after the filter.

To bleed, keep the schrader valve in place. Turn the starter key to the 1st position which'll start the fuel lift pump which is in the tank. With the fuel lift pump running press the schrader valve in, air/ fuel may come out together.
It maybe neccessary to do this a few times waiting about 5 mins between bleeds. When no air - only fuels comes out of the scrader valve the system is bled.
Air can remain in odd places which may require driving the vehicle for a while and bleeding again.
