2.2 custom egr cooler bypass question

Postby Steve192 » Tue Oct 28, 2025 8:47 pm

Hello,

I have a 2015 2.2 transit custom.

It’s had a dpf and egr delete done with blanking plated fitted on egr end only.

I’ve since bypassed the egr cooler hoses by joining them together as I had an issue with it where it was leaking a small amount of coolant into the exhaust. I have 2 questions regarding this;

1, since I’ve joined the pipes together do I need to put anything in the open pipe ends? Like maybe a bit of coolant hose with a blank/plug/stop end on?

2, do I need to fit the blanking plate in the end of the cooler where it goes in to the exhaust manifold?

Any advice or input would be great.

Thank you

well to the lack of answers .. i was giving other people a chance to answer

i cant see having open ends on the cooler causing any trouble .. since you have the EGR blocked with a plate.

question 2 .. you've already achieved with the blanking plate. if its had a delete done.

the thing to worry about and get done is to make the PCM think it has a fully functioning EGR, you said EGR delete done .... two things would have already been done in that case.... the blanking plate and the software alteration hack.

unless i'm misunderstanding something. .

Hi mate,

I’ve seen numerous posts of people saying you should ideally blank the egr at both ends. I bought the kit below for this but not sure if it’s 100% necessary now I’ve bypassed the cooler pipes.

I don't know, the word "either" .. is different from the word both.

Says to me; you take your choice; where to put, one of the two plates provided.

I hope others here will input their views .

OR - perhaps using two, is making doubly sure there are no air or exhaust leaks. as thinking more into it ... says: you have had a water leak into it ... so that water leak becomes an air leak, if both coolant ends are open.

Yeah thats exactly my thinking mate.

The cooler is attached to the manifold so if there was a small water leak into the manifold then this will become an air leak now, which means the 2 cut off coolant pipes will be technically “open” as in the air leak will come back out that way. Im going to solder 2 15mm copper stop ends on to a spigot of copper and fit one to each end of the cut of coolant pipes just to be safe.

If the exhaust end isnt blanked off the I'd assume exhaust fumes will start coming out the cooler

My thoughts too. The fines will surely leak out of the open coolant pipes right?
