Mk5 2.5di NA oil capacity

Postby FDN850HU » Sat Nov 08, 2025 12:30 pm

Dear community, i would like ask some help regarding oil change on my bus. I changed the engine oil on my 2.5di bus. I let the old oil drip out, and i measured 5.5L. The oil filter is 2 months old, ran 2000kms with this 'old' oil and this bosch filter. So i left the filter in the engine, didnt want to replace it. I know from haynes that my engine would take 6.15L oil. The dipstick - which i check regularly - showed always in between the 2 notches. I could pour in 5.5L fresh oil into the engine, and have good dipstick reading, its above the 3/4. What do i do.wrong or what do I miss? The dipstick holder tube is moving around freely, i can take it out easily. It also breaths some oil out at its bottom. Can I presume that the dipstick holder is way too down and thats why i have good amount on the dipstick but have only 5.5l capacity in the engine? Thanks!

The haynes will be quoting oil fill with: empty oil filter and up to max line on dipstick - probably oil filter and galleries takes 1 litre to fill. may also include oil cooler circuit .. for instance if you had it on axle stands and took the oil filter off .. the upwards pointing of the front end, may drain some of the oil cooler circuit.
The oil cooler is a heat exchanger device that is near the oil filter .. it is plumbed with a supply from the water cooling of the vehicle .. it may hold perhaps 1/4 of a litre
As you can see all adds up .

You may find this manual much more informative, better written, easier to understand (engine wise) better than the Haynes and the ford one . NOTE : its the same engine in a Leyand Daf Vehical LDV

With a new oil filter it's about 6.5 litres, so without a new filter you are probably about right.

Lolzzzz

I can do an oil and filter change on my car and the non turbo di with 10l of oil with a little bit left over.

Car takes 3.8l
So........
Van is slightly under 6.2l

I've got a Haynes book of shite some where.

Oh found it. This is what they reckon.
