EGR coolant elbow(s) o-rings.

Postby Lew is » Tue Nov 25, 2025 5:31 pm

Hello.

Ford Transit mk7 2.2, front wheel drive. 2009.

I’m replacing the EGR valve. The new valve arrived without coolant elbows. I have removed the old ones from the previous EGR and have been advised i HAVE to replace the O-rings.

The thing is that there does not appear to be any o-rings on the original metal elbows, nor any trace of them within the EGR coolant channel. I did heat the EGR body to be able to better twist and remove the elbows, but would have thought there would still be a trace of the o-rings, if they were ever there?

Any advice would be truly appreciated.

Cheers, Lewis.

well there you go

i dont see o-rings

coolant only goes to the cooler .. is that what you are talking about ?

all the other seals are gaskets

unless you are talking about the "GAS re-circulation tubes .. it has have an o-ring
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/~FIAAeSw ... l1600.webp

which isn't given a part number on the diagram

so then you buy the tube with it on or improvise ... heat proof something or other , sorry only thing i could find:

acetal silicon / silicone (builders stuff in tubes) is quite heat proof melts at 190 - 210 centigrade

diagrams and part numbers

and all i see on the cooler itself are raised rings on each pipe... sort of built in olives / barbs / flanges what ever they are called

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the useful reply.

For clarity; it is the metal 'arms' of the EGR itself. The new unit does not have these.

I've attached two images; the valve I have, and the same type with the 'arms' / elbows (red arrow) and a blue arrow where the elbow sits in the EGR... this is where there should possibly be an o-ring/seal inside.

Having said this, the part of the elbow that sits in the valve is a flat surface, as is the opposite (mating) surface so I guess an o-ring may not be necessary.

Yeah i see them on the other diagram on that site

http://www.catcar.info/ford/?lang=en&l= ... MysxMzM%3D

really not sure why they have two sets of diagrams and no info if FWD or RWD on the site

that's as far as i can help .. its up to others here now, who know more than me , cooling must go through the EGR as well

Depends on where the vehicle is...which country etc....here in Aus, they don't use the cooled EGR valve on many Transits for some strange reason...mine doesn't have the pipes either and is like the first pic, was like that from new. You need to specify which when you buy them. It doesn't matter whether FWD or RWD, the same valve is used on either.

The pipes are just pressed into the housing, no O-rings, probably a sealant of some type. I don't think you can buy the pipes separately either.

It’s the wrong valve,
You’ve been supplied the earlier non water cooled valve.

Those pipes should come with the valve, fitted by the manufacturer.

Don't know about "earlier"...some have the pipes and some don't...my neighbor has an earlier model 2006 Mk7 2.4 than mine (2008) and his has the pipes whereas mine does not.

UK vans didn’t get water cooled EGR till end of stage 4’s production, pre stage 5
I’ve an ‘07 130 fwd and an ‘09 140 fwd,both not cooled
My 10 plate 115 is…

Never seen any uk van as early as 06/56 cooled.
The early EGR valve body didn’t even have the holes in for pipes to be fitted to.
Then came ones with the holes
Finally cooled ones (cooper brand)
Then the stage 5 had pierburg cooled valves.(along with different pcm cal)

My '09 140 is water cooled, as is my 2006 130 (both FWD).

My 2006 100PS RWD wasn't water cooled, but the 2007 100PS RWD that came in to the unit next to me a few weeks ago was water cooled...

How many mk7’s still about now, haven’t had replacement engines or been altered from when they left the factory though….

Most are like triggers brush by now….

Either way,if I was OP I’d be getting a valve with the coolant spigots already in.
If you do fit them and one fails or drops out and looses all the coolant…

If I was OP - I would just join the pipes together!
