Injection Fuel Pump help please

Postby EmmaK1 » Wed Dec 03, 2025 10:09 pm

Hi Guys,

I really need some help and advice here. I have a 2006 55 plate 280 with the 1998 Duratorque engine.

Five weeks ago I took it to my local garage to have the power steering belt (not the serpentine belt) changed. When they had finished it would not start. I was there and they were totally nonplussed and very confused as to why it would not start. I left it there, no option. They told me later that a few hours later it ran normally and then would not start again. They called in an auto electician who found a fault code for the fuel pump

I purchased a fuel pump off a running engine and Ford main dealer confirmed it was the correct pump. My garage was then unable to fit it for two weeks and were then unable to contact the mechanic who had changed the pump four years ago, so did nothing as they could not match the pump to the powertrain control module.

I had it taken to another garage in town. They say it is the module so have take the electronic module off the pump, intending to read the codes, then enter them into the module off the donor pump and fit that module to the pump on the engine. This to avoid having to reset the mechanical timing. They have had the van for three weeks now and tell me they are unable to find a mechanic who has the Ford software to read the codes off the old module.

It is standing in their yard, in the rain, with the front off and no bonnet, and no cover over the fuse/relay box or fuel pump.

To say I am frustrated is an understatement.

Am I being pissed about?
Could they have damaged the wiring between the two modules while they were heaving the engine about changing the belt without removing any pipework?
Does anyone on here know of someone in Cumbria in the far NW of blighty who could code the pump?
Failing that does anyone on here have the software/pc they could lend, hire or sell?
Could I get the powertrain control module off the donor van and switch that so that the pump and powertrain control modules are paired?

At this rate will end up scrapping the van.

Any advice or help gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

well the scanning software they should using is FORSCAN and is FREE and you download to a laptop ... and you buy an interface cable £25--- softwatre download and any questions available from here

here's the forum

https://forscan.org/forum/

i dont know if a 1998 engine would be port injection or direct

but sounds like a TDDI to me

the device / module that sits on top of the Bosch VP44 or VP30 Diesel Fuel Injection Pump is called an EDU or EDC, they are problematic, in that they have transistors in them that fail

the modules can be repaired by various companies .. for about £70

all the best.mark

55plate will be Mk6 TDDi, and the 1998 will be the 2.0L FWD.

You need an "old school mechanic"...Don't forget, your van is 20 years old now, most of the younger mechanics these days will have no idea...and many garages won't work on anything older than 10 years.

Forscan will be able to code the pump. It's free to download and the cable is cheap enough.

Thank you for the advice Guys,

Unfortunately it is too late. The garage called in a semi-retired expert who declared that the pump needed replacing. After five hours work he discovered that the man who did ithe job four years ago had massively overtightened the bolts rounding some of the heads and damaging threads on others. At that point he decided it was not worth continuing and gave up. It is now an engine out job, probably a replacement engine, cost £1,440 plus the replacement lump.

To say I am pissed off is an understatement.

I still believe that the men who replaced the power steering belt damaged the wiring harness and don't want to risk all that cost to still have a non runner.

Anybody want a set of alloy wheels?

Has anybody any recommendations for a good replacement in the £2,000 to £3,000 range. Not necessarily a Transit (heressy I know but... Needs must.)

As I final note I must acknowledge Peter Remmington at Auto Tec Diagnostics for his quick email response and telephone assistance.
