fuel gauge problem

hi lads , any help please, ive a mk 7 hitop and i put forty pounds of diesel in approx one week ago and the cluster said i had 218 miles of fuel, after a 6 mile journey the cluster then said i had 63 miles left and after it was not used for a week it said 0 miles left, there is no marks at all on my workshop floor and i got to the service station with no problems, the vehicles mileage is correct and hasn't changed but the fuel dial is on empty, not sure about any more trips until i can find the cause.help please

There is a float in the fuel tank. this sends signal to the cluster

Unfortunately its installed from the top, so the tank has to come out.

i don't know , you don't want to be lowering that tank whilst its high on fuel, as it will be heavy .

you need perhaps a temporary dipstick made out of a twig or something ,to see , when it low enough on fuel, so you can then drop the tank and sort the problem.

the unit in the tank that does all this is called a "sender"

Sounds like the fuel level sender or its wiring is giving the wrong resistance, so the gauge is reading incorrectly. Check the sender unit for corrosion or a loose connector and run a diagnostic scan for any related fault codes. If the sender is faulty, replacing it usually cures the erratic range. Also rule out the cluster itself by testing with a known‑good gauge if possible.

Good luck finding one to work on an old Transit...many main dealer garages are reluctant to work on anything more than 10years old these days.
