Does any one now what to do?

Postby Beform » Tue Jan 20, 2026 4:58 am

Hi,

Iam changing the timing belt on my '79 transit mk2 1.6 but am missing a spring on the tensioning to put the timing belt under tension. Try to order one but all the replacement tension rolls sets come without a spring.

There wasnt a spring on the previous timing belt but looking a the haynes manuel there should be one.

Does any one now what to do? How should i put tension on the timing belt?

Thanks

At a push if you can't find a spring,do it manually.

Don't forget over the years the spring will have lost some of its tension,so even if I was still present I'd only use it as an indicator and tweak the belt if needed.

You should be able to twist the belt 1/4 of a turn on the longest part between pulleys.

I've got the old tensioner on my Di with the spring arrangement.
Always have to apply a bit of manual force to get it right.

Yes as above do it manually also I worked on company fleet back in the day so it was only done by us and I think that Ford stopped fitting the spring

Looks like they removed the spring after 1985

This sierra manual has both methods .. and explains the method with spring before 1985 and after 1985 without spring
link leads to direct PDF download, note for others here .. includes DOHC engine

search with the words "timing belt"
