I’m doing my very first glow plug change and going about it quite slow and careful, as I dread the scenario of snapping one. At first none would move, two hours and two rounds of wd40 and gentle push one came, another two hours after that. That was yesterday. Today a third one let go, but the last one seems more determined to «remain home»
However, now I’m getting somewhat less patient, as I need to have the van ready for work sunday morning, and there is still lots to do but I can’t move forward until this is finished (I could just leave it in and say 3/4 is good enough for now, though I’d prefer the whole set renewed, and we have a bit of a cold spell here atm)
I’ve been easy on pressure, capped with a torque wrench at 15 nm. Not really sure where the torque limit for extraction should be though. Could 20 be ok, or is that “snap-risk” zone?
A very common advice is doing the job on a warmed up engine. While that is not an option for me atm, I was considering if for instance blowing hot air into the two inlet ports below it with a 2000w hot air gun could substitute?
If so, would it also help to make a shielding in front of the glow plug, to minimise heat on that?
If you have any little tricks or tips, please advice
Cheers, McGilvray
