Gearbox code difference

Postby Goldylox » Mon Feb 16, 2026 9:59 pm

Hi there, my gearbox blew up from my Transit based hymer .
The former owner replaced the engine with a 2.5TD from a transit from 1993 so a MK4

Now, the gearbox code on the one i have is 88VT-7006-AA and now i’ve found one which they have done up but has the code 88VT-7006-AB

So what would be the difference with the AA or the AB version?

I’m based in Holland and the parts are harder to find .
I’ve seen gearboxes with the same code but then they would have to come from Poland , Estonia France or Spain and then i dont know what i’m getting .
The one in Holland is refurbished but annoyingly with AB on the end instead of AA

Can someone help me please .
Want to get my camper back

So far as I'm aware, those last two letters are updates on the original numbers, therefore AB is an update to AA, and AC would be a later version again etc.

So I have changed my gearbox even though it had the last two digits different .
Works well but does leak still a bit .
I guess the gearbox oil is very thin and they did fill it up to the brim.

Oil shouldn't be too thin, it should be 75W80 gear oil.

The Ford spec for the oil is WSD-M2C200-C which is basically 75W90/75W80 GL4 Synthetic.

I use Redline 75W90 in mine.
