2021 dual rear wheel axle

Postby snax53 » Fri Feb 27, 2026 10:13 pm

Hi. My crewcab tipper has a clunky/loose differential, I always thought it would just be the backlash that was needing adjusted back to spec. The other weekend I removed the diff cover and discovered the backlash was fine, well within spec, it turns out it is the carrier that is worn. The pickup was an ex lease vehicle that was used on the HS2 project so it has been 'off road ' most of its life and i can only think it has been wheel spinning a lot up and down a muddy site which in turn has caused the excessive wear in the carrier. The spider gears have a lot play and also the side gears have play on the halfshaft splines.
My question is, will the carrier from a single wheel axle differential be the same as the double wheel version?
Both single and double wheel pt no's start with 'GK31 4001 ###' its only the last 3 letters that are different. There are plenty of used single wheel axle for sale and I was considering just swapping out the carrier and gears and changing the ring gears.

No the single rear wheel carrier is not guaranteed to be the same as the dual rear wheel version. Even though both part numbers start with GK31-4001, the last three letters matter that usually indicates differences in load rating, offset, or internal dimensions. DRW axles are built for higher payload and often use different carrier specs.

Before buying anything, check the full axle code on the VIN plate and confirm the exact carrier part number for your axle ratio. Swapping just the carrier and reusing your ring gear can work, but only if the casting number and bearing sizes match exactly.
