the shield (cover) does not have two bolts in it, it just pushes over it ... this shield is there to stop the heat from the disc burning the rubber boot. and if its rotted away your new ball joints will not last long

when i bought these shields , it took some looking to find, just looked at my email they were £14.99 (in year 2024) each and genuine ford and the only ones listed on ebay.

now you have maybe 10 listed ,note only one with ford logo ebay seller .. and cheaper than the rest .. as some are over £50.

in catcar info .. mk7 only illustrates the two bolt shield design .. the mk6 shows it without the two bolt shield . unlike the connect, no cover / shields in the diagram for mk6... although .. in sure yesterday when looking at ebay, i seen a ball joint with the "connect type" shield included with a ball joint for the mk6/7 transit

just been out and checked both my 53 plate connect and my 07 430 ambulance have the same LBJ, unshielded with circlip
i wonder what spec dictates which is ftted ?, TBH i'm not a prolific transit mechanic (not for a good few years now) but i've never changed the shielded type, never come accross one and i've done FWD, RWD, SRW and DRW so i wonder what the spec is to have them :?
Mk7 Lower Ball joints all look the same. The taper can be a larger diameter on the HD twin wheel but seen both types.
Never seen any Mk6, Mk7 or Mk8 with a bolted bottom Ball joint.
My 200ps with HD suspension takes a std ball joint as it's a single rear wheel.

To remove without drama on the vehicle:
M16 long set screw and nut.
A section of heavy duty pipe or deep impact socket that fits over it.
Spacers to suit if required.

Bottom ball joint out of lower arm.
Drive shaft out of hub.
Circlip off.
Bolt and sleeve inside knuckle, between ball joint and upper body of knuckle.
Wind the nut up the bolt to push the ball joint out.

Seen more damage than it's worth from people with low skill or accuracy. But yes it can be quicker.
