Leaking scuttle seal

Postby Stevebrookman » Mon Jun 22, 2026 7:22 pm

Recently bought a mk6 camper. Noticed a bit of water coming into top of engine through the rubber scuttle seal. Tried sealing it - but I think it's a bit deformed as well. Any suggestions where to get a new one?

Also how do you stop the water dripping down either side of the scuttle where the rubber ends? I see it dripping onto the air filter box. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards Steve

The Mk6 scuttle leaks all over the place and it is common for the air filter to get flooded and cause the filter element to disintegrate. I tried all the sealing and messing about solutions but the in reality you won't stop it. You'll also get rainwater pooling around the injectors and if it's a TDCi then there's electronics that don't improve under water. I made a cover for my engine to allow the water to run off without pooling between the cams and soaking the injectors. I then wrapped the airbox in plastic so the drips run away.

Thanks T350- looks a good solution. Will have a look for some similar rubber. What did you use?
I'm going to use these trays to catch the water from the ends of the scuttle.
I've epoxyed hose into them- one pipe goes into plastic drain the other drains by the washer bottle. I'll use heavy duty velcro and zip ties.

I used some matting that I think came out of a van I used to have. It covered the floor. Whatever you use must be able to handle the heat of the engine. I secured it with cable ties so it is easy to remove for maintenance. Then I tested to make sure the water did run off to the sides and not fill the space between the cams.
As for the airbox. If you wrap it in strong polythene and secure with ties making sure it goes down past the joint where the top of the box fits to the bottom then the water can just drip to the road.
Have you checked inside your airbox yet? When I first opened mine the element was is such a state that I removed it with a vacuum cleaner!

Found where it is coming in. It's running down the windscreen -behind the scuttle plastic and dripping down. Will take the wipers and cover off and have a look. It did have a windscreen replacement a while back.

Put a bit of duct tape on temporarily-seems to have stopped it. Will seal it down later in the week with CT1 or Tigerseal.

If the windscreen has been replaced recently, they may have broken the clips that hold the plastic screen side trims on....water gets in through the holes for the clips and runs down the inside of the A pillar....not that this is your issue but worth checking.

Many thanks Smithy.

The screen was replaced last year. Will have a look.

Had another look. It's running down the screen, behind the plastic cover and dripping down. I've put some duct tape sticking the plastic cover to the screen for now-seems to have stopped it. Will use a bead of CT1.

Thanks again. Steve
