I suspect since you don't know about the learns, they have never been done whilst you have owned the vehicle.??
The engine is a mechanical device, over time it wears, the engine itself wears, high pressure fuel pump, injectors, SCV etc..they all wear over time and their operating characteristics will also change over time, leading to faulty operation, poor performance and poor fuel economy... When the vehicle was new, the learns were done at the factory and she would have been running optimally....after say 100k miles, the worn pump, SCV and injectors may not be as efficient as they were when new. The learns basically test and take a snapshot of the pump, injectors and SCV performance....takes a datum reading and then adjusts the PCM mapping of each to suit their current condition. It's actually very clever.
The learns are basically a tune up for the fuel system components. Often just a run on the learns will bring many a poorly running Euro-4 Transit back to life. If the injectors, SCV or PRV are not at their best, the learns may fail and they may need replacing and the learns done again.
