MK3 1991 Transit Bosch Conversion

Postby Peterr » Sat Aug 08, 2026 7:24 am

I have a 1991 2.5Di with a 4BA engine. Which Bosch pumps are compatible?

I have three pumps:

Bosch 0460414083 /415.
Bosch 460414145 /686-2
Bosch 460414119 /624

Will these work?

Petter, I know for sure that the Bosch 415 is suitable. I use one myself.

Thanks! I’m really satisfied with the old-timer pump specialist. He’s not expensive and does a wonderful job. Getting all my pumps done for resale. Already sold one here in Italy, covering the cost of rebuilding the others.

I also have a Transit camper MK2 1984. It has a Lucas CAV. Can this be replaced with a Bosch?

Petter, sorry!
I was mistaken. I have a Bosch 145 pump, not a 415.
The Lucas CAB pump can be replaced with a Bosch pump. But it needs to be done by a specialist who understands what they're doing.
Pencil injectors have a different operating pressure.
Slightly lower.
Therefore, the cyclic flow rate will increase, and smoke may appear during acceleration and under heavy load.

The MK2 has those fat short injectors. Not the Stanadyne “pencils “.

On the MK2 if I’m correct I would need to change the pipes, the pump pulley, the camshaft pulley, and crankshaft pulley?

Optionally the motor head to fit the Stanadyne injectors.

Correct me if I’m wrong or missing something.

Peter, there's a ambiguity in the definitions across languages.
In the Russian-speaking world, the thick, straight injectors on older diesel Transit vehicles are called "pencil-shaped," while the thin ones, which are called "pencil-shaped" in English-speaking circles, we call "Ч-shaped."
Because their shape follows the shape of the Cyrillic letter "Ч" ( "CH")
Here you need to consider what's easier and cheaper: keeping the old pulleys for a 2.5 mm low-tooth belt or replacing all the pulleys with a 3.5 mm high tooth and avoiding the hassle of finding a low-tooth belt.
Perhaps it's easier to replace all the pulleys—on the fuel injection pump, camshaft, and crankshaft.
