Sump corrosion

Postby Gixerk8 » Sat Aug 15, 2026 8:57 am

Just had oil & filter done on my 2018 Transit [2.0 ecoblue] - garage said there was corrosion on the sump - how long should this be left before changing as I'm off around Europe - garage didn't say do it urgently

sump gets changed with every wet belt, has to come off to change the oil pump wet belt

if it hasn't been changed , suspect wet belt oil pump belt hasn't either.

wetbelt now being adviced every 60,000.

all the best ..mark

If it’s not had a belt on time alone it’s due a belt I’d be more concerned about the belt then the sump looking crusty

What we were saying is:

When the belt is done .. the oil pump belt should have been done at the same time.

To do the oil pump belt, sump has to be removed .. and because the sump distorts when they take it off .. a new sump is required .. obviously they never did the sump .. so the oil pump belt wasn't replaced ?

or
if you can see excess sealant around the sump .. they did replace it and short-cutted the sump replacement .. if you dont see sealant, the sump wasn't replaced and the oil pump belt wasn't replaced.

Many mechanics don't know that there is also an oil pump belt, that has to replaced at the same time .. As the oil pump belt has the same dodgy lifespan as the timing belt.

There’s a lot of questions to ask the garage if it was the same one that did the belt first why was it changed was it done as a routine service interval requirement or because of a breakdown as mark said has the sump been off for the price of one probably cost more in labour removing and cleaning it if it’s not been off as well as oil pump belt the oil pickup pipe is going bits of debris from the belts just from normal use

doing the belt without sump being off is a disaster waiting to happen as you NEED to clean oil strainer/pick up pipe .....
any pictures of the sump corrosion

Thanks all - just got worksheet from the Garage that did the job - everything was cleaned etc, only reason the sump wasn't changed - Ford had no stock - so I'll get it changed next oil change.

Cheers guys

That’s the good news’s you needed the sump can be scabby with rust for years and still be good if it’s not leaking after being removed and used again it will probably last till next oil change over the years I’ve seen loads of rusty looking sump’s and only changed 3 and they were only mk 1 Astra vans
I think you can get product for sealing tanks and the like I remember a local auto parts centres one being called petro patch for your trip to Europe it may be worth looking at getting something like it just in case

For me it’s don’t be tempted to poke it until it’s replaced! Usually provokes a leak.

I have used fibreglass repair kits successfully on sump’s that were leaking. Has bought me time or could be used in an emergency.
