Mk7 2.4L RWD Cooland leak rear of engine

Postby rossco_pb » Sun Aug 30, 2026 6:32 am

Got evidence of a small coolant leak on the left hand side (from rear) of engine - coolant is appearing on the rear bolt of the ladder frame and looks like it originates from the top or behind the oil cooler and yet the is no evidence on the actual top of the cooler or around the in and out coolant pipe work. Almost as if it is seeping from inside the oil cooler to the block? Anyone seen this? I cannot see any indication of leaks from above from EGR or egr cooler etc and no oil contamination apparent. It has only become apparent after the engine was out to repair a hole in number 4 piston and the leak only started after the van had been in a really cold overnight environment, ie minus 4deg C even though it had done a couple thousand km after the engine repair without issue. It is not gushing out and not even visibly leaking when hot but there is the pink residue there from when it has been leaking and reservoir drops a few mm after driving the van for a couple hundred km...

Probably had "barrs leaks" in the coolant .. now you've probably washed it all out .. hence the leak

To make a positive ID of leak .. coolant system pressure tester advised, pumped up to 15psi, this should make it show itself.

Oil coolers are not forever and some fail at the rubber seal, some fail internally .. seals are available, but you have to remove the oil cooler to see what you've got .. as there are different designs .. genuine ford are available on ebay. one there for £6.60 .. but it has to be the right one , as said .. has to come off to ID it

all the best.mark

He may be talking about the aluminium "stiffener" between the sump and block..??

Yeah...Ford call it a "stiffener" for some strange reason.
