So instructions from now on .. to anyone with ecoblue cold start problem, who come here, asking how and why , is crank it more with full good battery or with powerful engine boost starter trolley thing

how long do they crank until they decide it's some other problem?

Will this be then ,a persistent problem from that event , for ever more after? ..

You may need a different thickness of head gasket, if its skimmed .. there are 5 thicknesses..
1.05mm , 1.10mm , 1.15mm, 1.20mm , 1.25mm
1.05MM - 1.25MM , they are notched to indicate the extra thickness, 1 notch being 1.05mm extra thickness .. and 5 notches being 1.25mm
machine shop should advice .

This link is ecoblue custom model .. as you never said mk8 or custom

So when it’s a base engine fault,ie low compression for whatever reason, they will crank over and sound ‘normal’ but make no attempt to fire,or you can hear them trying on maybe 2/3 cylinders and eventually fire up.
This usually gets gradually worse over time, and is more of a problem during the winter or when outside ambient air temp is lower.A engine doing this fault, you may get away with it thru summer but as temp drops it will be harder and harder to start

I’ve never seen one do the ‘no compression’ thing without having run briefly first and either be stalled by accident or cut out.
The sound of the engine then is very different to the ‘worn engine’ scenario

It is exactly the same sound as a stripped or broken cambelt, hence the misdiagnosis
Spins over way too fast and totally free,as if there isn’t even a cylinder head fitted !

Is the fix: new lifters?

noting that the rockers and lifters are one part

No,
There is no fix I’m aware of,it’s just something they can do,with no permanent after effect.
No one’s ever offered an explanation of the cause,or attempted to prevent it being a possibility.

Yes, ours behaved exactly as Frag described. The sound was completely different from a normally worn, low-compression engine. It spun far too fast and freely, exactly like the timing belt had failed.

It’s strange that this happens so often but there is still no confirmed explanation. Oil pressure or the followers temporarily holding the valves open does seem like the most logical cause.

All i can think of is : oil changes grade in a diesel, the more soot it has in it .. so thicker oil makes more pressure . also drains slowly from lifters

That is assuming an abused one with 10,000 mile plus oil changes... NOTE - ford wanted you to change it at 36,000 miles ????? no wonder !

So, if you end up with one of those vans that had had 36,000 mile changes .. maybe this is what to expect .

A quick update: the machine shop inspected the cylinder head. They said the valves were not seating properly because of heavy EGR soot deposits, which eventually caused the valves to burn. The valve seats themselves were not the problem.

The oil on this van was also changed at intervals of more than 20,000 km, so your theory about dirty or thicker oil draining slowly from the followers could make sense as well.

Because of the debris you had in it ,you want to be very thorough at cleaning the galleries .. probably replacing the cylinder oilers and the combined rocker/ lifters

the cylinder oilers cant be cleaned as they are manufactured with a ball and spring in them as a sealed unit... unless you can find some way to test them with 50 psi oil

The 2.2s have a filter/screen in the main journal, that filters oil that is supplied to the turbo .. i cant see this on the ecoblue in the parts diagrams .

A quick update: the cylinder head came back from the machine shop with new valves fitted. We also replaced all the hydraulic followers and reassembled the engine.

When turning it over by hand, it now clearly has much more compression than before, so I think it should run properly. I’ll update the thread once the engine is back in the van and we’ve started it.

Final update: the engine started on the first attempt and is running perfectly. Thank you everyone for your help and advice — it was a difficult case, but we finally got to the bottom of it.

Great news

but

160,000 km is more or less 100,000 miles which is very low miles for this fault to happen, well it would be very low for 2.2's or 2.4s

Not a lot of people reporting (taking part)on ownership, mileage and struggles and events on the ecoblues here .

So hard to know what's expected from them!

About all we really know about is the wetbelt.
