Underbonnet insulation

Postby Stevebrookman » Fri Oct 09, 2026 1:17 pm

Currently putting a bit of Bilt Hamber anti rust wax on my mk 6 Autosleepers camper. Got the air filter box out and treating a bit of rust. The insulation on the side seems to hold a bit of water/damp. Is it of any use or can it be binned?
Thanks.

Nice camper 8) . Almost exactly the same as mine.

You've got me thinking now because when I first got mine the air filter element had collapsed into rubble due to water ingress. I fixed this with a new filter and then black plastic bin liners around the top of the airbox to stop the water getting inside.

However... I did not remove the whole airbox as you've done. So presumably I have the same issue. I will have a look (when the weather brightens up a bit). If it's soaked... and it probably is, then it's a rust trap and I will be removing it. Thanks for pointing this out.

(BTW... I have the same worklamp too  )

They are a good camper and go like the clappers!!

The insulation has caused a bit of corrosion. Where one of the air box plugs go through has rusted quite well and the inner wings it rests against has rusted. I've made a couple of metal pieces and will weld them in and then lather everything with Bilt aHamber Dynax UB. I'll put some photos up later.
Work lamp has taken a hammering over the years!!
All the best.

Poured a big of water over the insulation- it soaks up water very well. Just finished welding up the holes it caused. Will put some photos up later. These are pre- welding.

Wow! I'm using mine this weekend, but after that I must remove the airbox and see if mine has done the same. Either way I will be removing the sound-deadening sheet and filing it in the bin. Thanks for highlighting the issue

I'm away next weekend as well. Got to spray the wheel arch with two coats of wax and refit the airbox. The other place I found rust is on the roof- up against where the fibreglass roof panel is- mine had a bit of rust on the rear part. Thankfully the rest of the body is great. This is the last wheelarch to do. I'll inject all the box sections with wax next.

You poor buggers in the UK seem to get all sorts of rust happening, rust repairs are a common yearly MOT requirement...here in Aus we don't get much at all, I suspect it's all the rain, salt and grit on the roads you guys get during the winters etc..

My 2008 LWB RWD Hi-Roof is rust free....and hopefully will stay that way for many years. It has been very reliable since I bought it in 2014. Has just shy of 200k km now, so only 124k miles, which is not much compared to others I've seen on here.

You exagerate a bit....takes a few more seconds than that..!

The worlds No.1 deadliest snake, native to Australia.... is the "Inland or Western Taipan". Capable of dishing out a lethal dose of venom, can be lethal within hours if anti-venom is not administered quickly.

The worlds No.1 deadliest spider is also native to Australia.... is the "Sydney Funnel Web". Can kill within 15 minutes.....although nobody has died from one of these since ~1980 due to anti-venom being freely available since ~1981.

Haven't found any deadly spiders yet!!
Welding done and seam sealed. The brown stuff under the bonnet is the first diluted coat of Dynax UB. Another coat will be applied today after drilling hole for the other air box mounting.
