Recommended oil for our Transits is 5W30 Synthetic, it flows well during cold starts, however, in some countries where the ambient temp is warmer, a slightly heavier oil may be used. I use 15W50 Synth in my beast, (200k km ~124k miles). I find it keeps the hot oil pressure at idle a little higher... but even our winter temps here in Brisbane Aus are like summers in the UK. Heavy oils can sometimes cause starting difficulties in cold weather due to the increased drag on the starter.

Thicker/heavier oil isn't necessarily better, oils these days are very good compared to 40-50 years ago.
