Problem

Well went on another trip and didnt get spotted, all the way up to Cromer and a bit along the northern coast road, nice area and I got to see a steam train, plus a couple of vintage steam cars
Anyhow about 3/4's of the way up there, when I hit all the 50mph-30mph, 40mph sections I found that the go pedal became stiff to operate?
I ignored it until I stopped at a pub to get some food, came out to check the oil, water etc and found that the dipstick which has been loose for some time had spun around and the dipstick ring had caught in the cam mechanism that sticks out on the pump so I was pushing against the dipstick!
Ok I will have to clean the dipstick to block area and pinch it up, currently simply cabled tied it to some wires to stop it spinning but what a simple fault
Having read on here how common the dipstick tube is at coming loose never figured it would cause any real issues...wrong, so if you have a loose one get it fixed.

on certain bosch pumps it can actually get caught on the linkage and hold it on throttle, can get scary

mine did this all the time. you can hook it behind the header tank pipe

Or just fix it with a bit of silicone or bearing lock. No point rubbing a hole in the water pipe and ending up with 2 problems.

I will either silcone it or threadlock it, due to the length of the tube the only way I could cable tie it to a water pipe would be to tie the dipstick itself rather than the tube, which isn't a good idea.

just tap it so its slightly oval then silicone it in,making sure the surfaces are clean of oil

That's just plain old silicone Mark, any motorfators will do it probably even Halfords.

Ok looked up RTV silicone and the first few links were coming back as £18+ I would leave the cable ties for that cost! A fiver or so IS acceptable, the reason for asking as to which type as I am sure I have some bath sealant lying around or at least can get hold of some for free.

Bathroom sealent is no good mate doesn't work with oil.

You will get RTV silicone from a motorfactors in a toothpaste type tube for a couple of quid.

you cant beat abit of sylicon i use it for everything that needs a gasket!

I have a tube of silicone gasket goo whatchever they call it, bought simply to add to any paper/cork gaskets I may have to replace, learnt the hard way that gaskets leak so any extra sealing can't hurt, I think it is Blue stuff, but seem to recall that it stays flexible, which isn't really what a dipstick needs. I had a previous dipstick on an engine aradilted once, never caused a problem.

mate i normaly doo what geoff says make it slightly oval then abit of sylicon round it and tap it back in!
