OK. first of all let me say that I'm a total mechanical numpty.... however, we had a squeak with the old transit. Turned out to be the fan belt was dry (and it was new!). A can of silicone spray liberally used on the belt got rid of the squeak. It may not be the answer to your problems, but its a cheap and quick check!!!

I wouldn't every spray a belt with silicone spray, if the belt is squeaking it probably means it's been badly fitted, ie. to tight!

ooooo no, i wouldnt go anywhere near pullys and belts with silicone spray, bad move, it can hide things like over tightened belts, not to mention getting everywhere when its running

Got to admit, it does seem a bit silly spraying something that needs to grip with a lubricant! A bit like putting it on the tyres. I have seen this done before thought. However the fan belt is brand new.

Thanks, but I think the one gunslinger posted would be the right one, the one hicube pictured is a much later engine, and (maybe this makes a difference, maybe not) for a TD. If this bearing goes, will it take the cambelt with it? IE make it slip like it has snapped?

maybe fred, but they did redesign them a while ago and i think the recomendation was to switch to the newer design, like i said i fitted one to my 86 engine that looked nothing like that pic i posted but looked like the one 100ps_drw_hicube posted, can't for the life of me remember what i took off

Nice one Gunslinger, it was the cambelt tensioner, £65 for the kit ans a couple of hours of mechanics time ( too busy/lazy to do it meself). Thanks for the info. never had one of these before, so you learn something new every day! Oh, and I did get the later one fitted, it's good for the early engines too, like you said.
