windscreen seal

I'd rather smash a screen to get a genuine seal thats intact than use a pattern one cos it'll lift in the corners as someone aboves experience seems to show.
With some other classic cars screens are still available but genuine rubbers aren't!!

If its going in easily I see no reason why not just cover it all in lots of the no setting sealant and just clean up afterwards.
I'd want to get some sealer around the frame before fitting the screen tho as squirting it in afterwards can't really be as effective.

If you're cleaning upo an old one what are you using as solvent? cos most solvents can have the effect of drying the rubber. If thats happening or you want to stop it cracking, best treat it with something like armor-all or similar??? Any one got any ideas I seem to remember someone saying to feed them with vegy oil to get them nice and supple?

someone fitted one of those universal sealing strips to my mk i (u now, comes straight off a roll) and it leaked a bit. i removed the shiney plastic strip, crammed in as much black silicone as possible between the strip and the glass and bodywork, shuved the strip back in and now all seems dandy.

It will seem ok until the silicone rots the screen surround

I have removed my screen as there was rot in the frame/corner of dash. Would I be better off keeping the original screen rubber and just sealing it well?

I have refitted my original Mk2 one and sealed it in as best I can and so far it seems ok. It depends on what state your one is and how clean you can get it.
