oil pressure relief valve leaking

Postby fat-freddys-cat » Sat Dec 31, 2005 7:10 pm

Got a leak on oil pressure relief valve, couple o questions, 1st being would this leak be down to anything other than the o ring being shot? oil is coming from under bolt head. Second question, if not the o ring is it the relief valve spring stuffed or, could this signify something worse?
Cheers,
APPY NEW YEAR n' all that.

the o rings do go hard with age and leak/split

also the valve can come a wee bit loose.

remove it, clean it......inspect it! , fit new seal and tighten it up.

When you've got it out, you'll see that it's little more than a BIG bolt with holes drilled in it.

inside the main section is a plunger and a spring, make sure that the piston will move against the spring pressure fully and return to it's rest position. Also have a look to see if there is any heavy scoring on the piston which could suggest poor oil circulation.

I favor a couple of drops of thread locking compound on the threads when rebuilding.....not too much though!

and you m8.

access to the thing can be a problem, i recomend a socket, universal joint and a long extention, get the extentions down between the block and the pump and fit the socket to the extention once it's in position.

if tools are an issue, undo the altenator belt and tensioner, push the alt as far out of the was possible and get in there that way.
