and running without a air filter you are asking for big trouble ,you are lucky you still have the camper ,v4 engines were allways backfireing through the carbhow its not gone up in flames you are lucky!

Mine is metal hence hence the rustly hole I would assume its the right one to as my ice cream with a V4 had one. The original engine in my camper had one and there was one with engine I bought![]()
I think I will be puting it on tomorow then so i don't go up in flames!

baconsdozen wrote:Quite a few fords with V4s caught fire with carbs back firing, the hollow sections cast into the manifold can fill with fuel and oil and that hardly helps the resulting fire. When I bought Tarquin the transit it had a rusty air cleaner and I modified the air cleaner and welded a plate covering the whole top.I did the same thing on Courtenay the camper. If more than a fer drops of water get into the manifold whilst the vehicles parked its possible to get hydraulic lock when turning the engine over or when it first fires,if your lucks bad it might be enough to bugger it up for good.
Running without an air cleaner isn't none to clever with any engine, but on a V4 where mixture distribution is already uneven it might weaken the mixture enough to cause serious problems.
