EGR System (thanx Gemini)

Postby Aztran » Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:03 am

Ive had a real bad smoke problem since buying the van, took it too a mate of mine and he reckoned it wasthe Manifold pipes clogged with crap......

Took it all apart and a pipe that should be pretty much inch and a half wide was only half that, clogged with carbon........hes cleaned it right out in a machine and now its fine.

What he did do tho, was 'blocked' the EGR of, doesnt do a thing, both him and sum other matey reckon there useless and cause ure engine more harm than good and quite a few places do that now

Any ezperiences of this?

Pull the hose of the egr and put a ball bearing into the hose [its got to be a little larger than the hose so as it is a tight fit] and put the hose back on the egr and bobs your uncle no more smoke.I done mine 6 monthe ago and done more for the enviroment than Ford has .

Tricky for me to say since I have the turbo engine but....
The valve that opens the egr tube from the exhaust to the inlet manifold is operated by a vacuum from the pump on the alternator. To block the EGR system you can either, block the vacuum tube that opens the valve or block to EGR tune at either manfold with a plate that covers the opening. Personally I'm favouring a plate at the exhaust manifold as I'm not sure if the EPIC ECU can sense if the valve is opening properly.

Yeah?
What sort of mpg are you getting?
When I first got my van it returned 34mpg on it's first long trip. Since then I've sorted the tracking along with a load of other stuff and now I never get anything over 27mpg! Bah!

Believe it or not, EGR is meant to be helpfull towards the environment!!

DI manifolds are always clogged with a black oily sludge due to the EGR and the breather (mainly the EGR). They can also make the engine diesel knock badly if the valve starts sticking. On my old DI, I blanked the pipe off to the manifold with an aluminium plate modelled around the origional steel gasket.

i dont know if this aplies to the epic system steve , mine doesent smoke that much attal ,and even if my timeing maybe slightly out as i done it buy ear  but it pulls ok and has .9 of a bar boost! so i will leave alone ,also i think regular oil changes help ,and use thin oil like 5-30 in this cold wether for the first starting in the morning!
i can recal haveing a K reg banana di once and the inlet manifold was so full of black crud it was horrid! to me ours to kleen it ,but i put a blocking plate under the manifold and it was as slow as old boots ,so i had to leave the egr on it ,but it went well after a good cleen and turned out to be a exelent engine! :)
as for fuel consumptoin mine isnt that good attal, i got 360 a tank out of the auto but only around 320 out of this one but my gauge isnt reeding full wen it is so maybe there is more to go! :?
