Which 5 speed behind a 3 litre V6?

Postby Ron Wieringa » Sat Jan 07, 2006 12:54 am

Hi Guys, can someone out there please suggest which 5 speed would be best behind the 3 litre in my MK1? I believe your late model Capri's had these, can anyone recommend a parts dealer? and what price could I expect to pay? Shipping to New Zealand may be a killer, cost me $1000 (UK 300 pounds) to get a set of Lotus Cortina rims out for my Anglia, Cheers, Ron

I take it it's the Essex V6 if so all the 5 speeds i've seen have been the 4 speed with overdrive.

Somebody mentioned to me that I could fit a toyota crown (I think) overdrive behind the existing box. It is a separate unit. Hot rodders seem to have a lot of info on this type of stuff. I often fnd myself looking for an extra gear on my four speed. Must be a bitch to have a three speed.

It IS possible to fit a 5 speed to an essex. You need the 3.0 engine, type 9 gearbox from a 2.8i capri (but I would rebuild it first as it would be a bit marginal on strength with an essex engine's grunt) and this is the hard bit- you need to find a bellhousing from a 1972-74 ford consul 2.0V4.(has to be from a consul, other V4 applications are different) a few years back a firm called vulcan engineering remanufactured these, so I am sure theres one somewhere.
This bellhousing will fit the essex as the 6 has the same block as the 4 and will mate up to the type 9 5 speed. you would need to mix and match propshafts I think. not too sure on the clutch though. maybe essex cover with 2.8 capri plate?

I know I've read somewhere of this being done to a couple of Corsair V4's but despite turning the office inside out I can't find the article.I'm sure the author said that if he was doing the job again he'd try using a Sierra box but other than that I can't remeber the details.

the bell houseing you need is from a 2.5 v6 consul granada. NOT the v4,and just use the transit type 9 5speed circa 88/90 thats the iron one and it bolts straight in to mk1s and 2s,ive done 2 of them.and the gear stick hole is right to. :D :D
