Mk1 starter motor

Postby nigel bickle » Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:59 pm

Hi. Is the starter motor on an early (65) Mk1 v4 petrol fitted on any other vehicles?
Mine has died -and I need a replacement.
Its a 2 bolt Bosch with a piggyback solenoid, 9 tooth.
Ring any bells on other models/ cars it'll fit -so I can find a cheap replacement?
Thanks
Nigel

i dont know but would think it would be on any of the V4 engines (grannys ,consuls , capris [did they get the 4 ? the classic did ] ) and maybe the essex V6 as its the same engine just a 6 pot

Yep the essex V4 is the same starter and alternator. If your motor factors say there is no starter available for the V4, ask them for one for the V6, as fitted in the Mk2 transit. I bet they will either have one or get one for you!

Loathe to spend a lot on a new one at pres- last 'recon' starter from Soverereign cost £150 and lasted 3 months.
Cant recondition mine as its 6 volt (as was the whole van) -now 12. Cost prohibitive.
So -if it is indeed the same as a V6 -perhaps I can find a scrapyard version.
Cheers guys.

Getting a bit more complicated- as no one recgonises it! Its a Bosch pre -engaged -everyone tells me it should be inertia-and I'd swop - but they dont match at all.
Number on it doesnt appear in any lists, Bosch Uk don't have any listings- and I cant find anything comparable.
Its 6 volt -which doesnt help -as I've converted to 12 -and this has died......

No pics at pres- cos I forgot to take any before i gave it to a local 'sleuth' -to track down -so far without luck.

Its 2 bolt, 9 tooth, piggy back pre-engaged. Any ideas?

Surely the bellhousing and block are the same anyway so why won't a normal V4 starter go on? How about a pic of the old one?

Cant put a pic up -its still with a good local factors as they try to match -so far unsuccessfully.
Yep -its def a German one. Recently imported from France -this 65 Pickup was 6volt -despite everyonme telling me they didnt make one.
So the starter is just the next aggravation in a slow rebuild!"
