Leeds City Council use number plate recognition to catch people making regular trips as it figures they are traders of some sort, York CC use it at their main one,same reasons and Tadcaster which is run by contractor for NYCC for Selby CC has introduced residents permits. York checks commercial vehicles for trade waste and won't take trade waste without an Environment Agency Waste Carrier Licence. Min charges of £20+vat per ton of green waste exc soil, and £40+vat per ton for landfill inc soil and rubble.

another reason for discouraging people from dumping stuff is that the councils are genuinely running out of landfill sites to dump it! all thats going to happen in future unless they sort it out is an increase in fly tipping. thankfully this sort of legislation hasnt reached us up here in the welsh valleys yet, the blokes down the tip didnt bat an eyelid when I turned up with a full transit load. they even help you unload it..although thinking about it, it IS merthyr tydfil so they are probably looking to see if theres anything they can use..

Councils may be running out of landfill sites, but yet they moan about having to clear up after fly tippers. Make it easy to tip, and fly tipping will stop. Sorry that would mean you can't squeeze money out of people though won't it?

Who actually needs to go to a tip on a regular basis though? I've only been there once with my own stuff.

People are all too quick to send stuff to landfill just cos they don't want it anymore. I hate going down to the "waste and recycling centre" cos you can't take stuff away

Thankfully ours is free, the odd trailer of logs as a sweetner keeps them happy and allows me regular trips with either the van or my pickup and 8x5 trailer.

Waste from my work is skipped and charged to the customer. The cost of a skip is getting alarming, £150 a skip last month.

We considered a regular skip on the drive but most of our waste is compostable so we keep and re-use most of it as soil conditioner or chipping for paths. Turf gets piled for a year to rot down to brilliant soil. Ivy and leylandii is all that goes to the tip as the ivy is usually too tangled to go through the shredder and leylandii just clogs.
