Vibration

Postby Strolls » Mon Jan 28, 2008 12:14 pm

I have a TDCi swb 03.

About 6 weeks ago I noticed a vibration when driving on the motorway - felt like a front wheel needed balancing.

Since then I've had..

wheels balanced (more than once)
Wheel alignment checked
new tyre
Tyres swapped Front to back.
Engine mounts changed (one had a split so changed them all)

Still have the vibration. Most noticeable when applying power.

I can detect it at a lower speed now - about 40mph.

Any suggestions?

Inner driveshaft spider joint, check to see if there is any splits in the gaiters or movement in the joint.
I miss my 'courtesy van'............140 Glx..now a Jumbo :(

Vibration got worse - very noticeable at 40mph

Have found that inner bearing on the driver's side driveshaft is worn.

Cause or symptom?

Taking apart tomorrow to inspect.

You were right

Inner driveshaft spider worn, which also led to some bearing wear.

Strange that I felt no knocking, just a wobblyness - very like unbalanced wheel.

The diagnostic for this was - wheel wobble only present when the foot is on the accelerator. If you take your foot off, it goes away.

Spider - not available on its own.
Driveshaft assembly is the smalles part they sell - £500+
Found it from a factor at £200+

03 plate

70,000 miles

The price is for the whole drive shaft including two spider joints - but is still expensive. So many vehicle companies are making the vehicles a bit cheaper, but loading up on the spares.

THese vans won;t be worth repairing when they get a bit older. A coupel of years down the line, and a part like this fails - the rest of the van might be alright, but the cost of repair this little bit would write it off.

My last van- Astramax lasted more that 15 years.
