new van

Postby hessey50 » Mon Feb 25, 2008 10:33 pm

Just lost sanity and bought a 1980 transit 2 pinto petrol caravan only 38000 on clock driving back interesting 100 miles with more play in the steering than an old A60 I once had and despite an mot only a few miles but some months ago a serious lack of brakes but as its as aerodynamic as a brick it got me home. I would like to have wipers spindles seized solid and blew fuse do these free off or are they one piece, brakes looks like the mk 111servo conversion gearbox the 75 route,do you keep orig prop with this?

wipers should free off easly - its not too dificult to take the lot off :D

and the MT75 needs a different prop :D try searching on here there is loads of info for the conversion and anything you dont understand just ask - its a good upgrade and if you have all the bits not too dificult :D

Welcome hessey! Most Mk2s have play in the steering, and when it's light check the insides of the back wheels for wheel cyl leak. Is is a SWB or a LWB?

based on transit 100? no leaks on rear as far as I can see but after cleaning rust (Lots of it) off servo and washing off area with brake cleaner weeping under servo. Closer inspection awaits daylight. Have read through the recent gearbox posts and the prop seem to be the problem with fitting a 75 box so that may have to wait Lots of work to do on interior as well as putting my taunus engine back into my other project a Saab 95V4.Why have one old beastie when you can clutter the drive with 2?

what's the pedal doing? Hard, spongy or clreeping down when you put you foot on it?

pedal low but eventually hard front brakes only working on hydraulics but rear fine on hand brake rear section of m/cyl losing fluid dribbling on servo joint nothing leaking out rear so my bet is the mcyl but the servo is so rusty i would not trust it even if I rekitted the the cyl so mk111 off we go! Going to adjust s/box ,Carefully, and grease all in sight. Looking at transit club pictures all interior trim /funiture save cushions and curtains appears as left Ci Wiring is a different matter Mains supply 1st to be sorted so I can work in it at night in through frony door light on out back door down pub a possible plan. Thanks for info when I work out how to will post photos

Sure there's nothing wrong with a wee bit of daftness now and again. My dearest has allowed me to buy my MK1 landliner (thanks again to all for sage advice) to lose some of the flab by doing some more long distance cycling. I think she may have forgotten that i also have our old '72 Saab 96 (yes tax exempt unlike my landliner) up at my folks in Telford. Went up there a couple of weeks ago and boom she starts after a bit of assistance from jump leads and my Saab 900, despite three years standing!
