Sticking door locks

Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I have a '99 SWB and am having problems with the locks not unlocking. They lock just fine, but when it comes to unlocking - no joy.

This started about a month ago, first with the sliding door and then with the passenger door and has now progressed to the drivers side - leaving me having to enter via the rear (oo-er).

Has anyone had anything similar happen to them - do ya reckon taking the barrells out and giving them a good go over with WD40 might solve it or am i looking at a new lock set (i've seen them on ebay for around 50 notes) ...

Does you key look badly worn? If it's not the key worn then it will be the lock that's worn and the only thing to do is fit a new lockset, but this is not a 5 minute job and is really a pain in the arse to do but is probably the only solution!

Wow - thanks for a super quick reply!

I think its definitely the locks as non of my (3) keys work ... although interestingly one of the keys has never worked in the drivers side.

How complex a job are we talking? it is just a case of swapping out the cylinders? I was assuming the time consuming part would be getting the trims off? and for that reason, doing the sliding and back doors would be relatively simple ...

It would be very unusual for all the locks to be worn out, the drivers one is most common, I think I would go and get another key cut first just to check.

If it does turn out to be the locks its not just a case of getting the panels off....there are large metal cover plates that are riveted on that you need to drill out first.

Its a bit strange as they lock perfectly, but 9/10 just wont unlock.

just a thought - if i get a key cut from my worn out ones will that not be a copy of a worn key and not work either? or am i being a bit silly?

that will be because any ford key can lock any ford car with the same type of key i.e my key for my hicube will lock my mums 05 plate fiesta and vice versa but not unlock!!!! it defo sounds like worn locks to me as they do wear very quickly with regards the trims they are the worse part especially the front doors the window winder is a nightmare too i usually bend an arc welding rod and hook it down between the winder and the door card and try and pull the clip off that way some of the metal plates that cover the locks will not need to go back on unless you are fussy to be honest you are better off with out it the other thing to point out is watch your fingers as the door edges are bloody sharp good luck

All my locks are the same - lock perfectly but don't unlock so I put an extra padlock on the back doors & go in that way if I have to lock it up. It would've been nice if the previous owners had told us so we didn't end up stranded in Asda car park but there you go. When you're really in trouble is if your fuel filler cap lock goes unexpectedly - it's the only lock on mine that unlocks so I keep it well greased.

bloody hell is there no crime up your way there were 2 vans stolen from our local b&q the other day they had only been in there 5 mins and one of them was locked as well

A friend of mine with a '94 ecsort went through 3 sets of locks in as many years! Then he fitted a cheap remote key fob to his central locking and it's been fine ever since (unitl some **** broke into it, see my post in non-transit talk). With that in mind I did the same to van as soon as I got it. Of course that's only a solution if you have central locking.

When I leave my van at night I never lock it up, I take 90% of the tools out every night, the bits that are left are stuff like wire brushes and the rather large(and extremely heavy) engineers vice etc, I just figure that if anyone decides they want to have a look around I would rather they didnt break the locks to get in. It has been 'entered' once, I went out one morning to find the SLD open, they had taken the 50p or so in change that was in the dash.....nothing else was missing

Anyhow, back to the locks..

Was just reading that actually ... definitely worth thinking about - main problem is that the van gets used for surfing, and I can't take a remote fob in the water with me ...

I've got a replacement lock set on order now, hopefully i'll get it installed over the weekend ...

Probably is a bit of crime up here but I only ever lock my van if i'm in Ferriers in Aberdeen & I never lock my house door.
