Your saying that the engine's coolaning system had retained excessive pressure for a week

That sort of pressure is usually only caused by compression pressures entering the coolin system, but a fecked expansion tank could cause a build up of pressure too.

Do you have access to a pressure testing kit?

If so, test the cap, it should relieve the pressure at around 1.0 to1.3bar, if it hasn't blown off by then, scrap the cap.

also attach the pressure tester to the tank and run the vehicle, if it's pressurising........you'll see on the gauge.

thanks nighthawk i will try a different cap on it this week unfortunately i dont have a pressure test kit if its any help this pic shows what it done to my last top hose

that sounds like something is blocked, retaining the pressure, so you filled it up, trapped some air, then tightened the cap down and compressed the air down and the trapped air got dislodged, however this would be an extreme case

will be getting a complete gasket set this week and refitting the head i have no idea what it is as apart from the head and the rocker cover every thing else is the same i cleaned everything before i put it back so i dont know

it was all fitted the same as it came off.. could it be an airlock

ye ran fine for 1000's of miles before , ye the bulge goes when you take the cap off

Well it's the cap holding pressure then, get yourself a new cap!

if the cap doesn't fix it

i'd like to suggest that you take the T stat out and drive it round for a day without it.
I realise it's going to be a little on the chilly side inside during the winter months because without the tstat, it's going to take a lot more time to heat up.

Then we can more or less eliminate air locks and tstat problems.

right yesterday i took the tstat out and drove for 15miles bloody cold but it still retains pressure and also when you take the cap off all the water comes rushing back into the tank any ideas

i have also tried a different tank and cap on it but no difference also i dont know if its connected or not but there seems to be excess pressure building up in the rockers as when you take the oil filler cap off there is a long hissing noise
