I haven't driven a LWB Mk1 in over twenty years, but the MK2 SWB and LWB are different to drive. I find the LWB is a nicer drive (Mk2), more steady due to the longer wheelbase and two extra rear wheels. As far as the Mk1 goes, the disc front axle swap is very easy (you may need to do the servo to match on the earlier vans), and the WB and the LWB did come with the same engines, originally 1600 crossflow and 2L V4 petrol engines, and Perkins diesel, our SWB has a 2L V4 and the Perkins is often replaced with the Di.

cheers fred very informative :D i must admit i prefer the look of the lwb and the added carring ability allthough if people think its better to have or start with a swb than i would do that. Providing i can find a cheep mk1 that is. Searching mk1 sean :D :D :D

For some odd reason some people think that a SWB takes up far less room  ! Obviously they have 2 more tyres to buy, other than that the wheel arches make them wider and the roof line is higher. My first van was a Mk1 SWB so I have a soft spot for them! On the Mk2s I defo prefer to drive the LWB.

For what its worth I prefer lwb too, mainly as they seem to sway less and feel a lot safer for towing, but I'd also like the feel of being able to get it in tha garage without removing wheels and flattening tyres! for that matter most people don't really get the luxury of choice, you get whichever van finds you!! , with more SWB seeming to survive , i guess because they can be dry stored easier and wheren't all bought to be overloaded and battered in quite the same way
