Torque sleeve

Postby MinorMatt » Tue Mar 18, 2008 8:02 pm

Hi Guys

My local diesel place has finally got a torque sleeve in for me (only 2 months after I asked for on  ) for £10 :o

Has anyone got some instructions how to replace it, including any tips/tricks and things to watch out for?

Thanks

hi
remove the 4 screws holding the top on the body of the pump, hold down when removing the last screw as theres a bloody great spring in there, remove top and lay out spring and top as it came of, you will now see a thin oddley shaped plate held down with 4 m4 allen screws, remove screws and lift off the plate , put your finger into the plunger and withdraw the plunger, now do the same with the sleeve itself, might take a bit of messing about to withdraw it, rebuilding is just the reverse of stripping, good idea to change the plunger too, done loads of these and the improvements in performance and economy is amazing
it was like that before i touched it !!

Hmmm are there several sorts of sleeve? or are they all interchangeable? the diesel place has supplied one that is rather different to the one I have... I also only have 3 allen bolts so have I got an oddity here?

Hi Matt,

Can you post a pic of what the supplier gave you as a "torque sleeve" ?

Thanks

Hi Del,

Ah ha thats the fella !!
wondered if Matt had the right part as he was asking about differences etc.
Have a few spare bits so thought a few pics on the forum might help for anyone
wanting to replace one themselves. The hard bit is teasing the sleeve out
of the bore, but all in all its a simple job and will save you pounds.

Where do you get your pump bits from mate ?

I think there are 3 types of torque sleeve... yes they supplied the torque sleeve but for the wrong pump :s

Image

The new one they have supplied is very like the one from the van except it has a much larger flange and doesn't need the spung metal ring around the top held down by the 3 allen screws because the screws go through the sleeve itself.

To get the plunger out i just stuck my little finger down the middle and pulled it out!

is there any way to work out the way the shims should go in the plunger?

I think its the number of them, rarther than which way you put them back. I'll mic. them up but
would bet they're all the same thickness. so long as the last one in, is the special shim and washer that the spring sits in you should be ok.

Does anyone have the diagram for the banana engine so I can replace the sleeve on my convoy? It's sporadically sluggish, vibrates my teeth out and then when idle for a little while in layby or such like kicks it through and returns to normal. What would the symptoms be if the sleeve had gone? Does this sound possible? Anything else I should be thinking of, fuel filter already changed a couple of times but problem reoccured so thats that ruled out.. :?
