If it doesnt rattle and doesnt smoke, and if serviced properly it will last very well, there is very little to go wrong with them :D

Welcome to the forum! Over 22 years of running the 2L "pinto" engine, the best we have had out of an engine was 116,000 miles. This was from new though and a lot can happen in the life of the van. The problem is it may not be the original engine.

As Rover said, as long as it doesn't smoke and is serviced well they can take a lot. Even having a cam belt snap will not damage the engine, put a new one on, set the timing and off you go! They are as you say 'puncture proof' (we say bomb proof), or at least as good as an engine will get. Remember the Mk2 transit engine is not made for unleaded (sans plomb) petrol though, so if there is smoke on start up that passes as the engine warms up, you have valve seat wear due to not having lead going in to the engine in the petrol.

For ultimate long life, the best engine is the 2.5 DI, though this is slower and noisier. We had one of these mid 1980s engines that went on for over 400,000 (no idea of the exact mileage as it was 2nd hand when we got it!) with only cam belt changes and servicing.

Both engines are best with a later 5 speed engine (the MY75 from the Mk4/5) which is a little trouble to fit but will give you lower revs on both engines and help prolong it's life.

My original engine was on 237,000 when I took it out :!: It still ran perfect but I had the chance of a recon with the auto box so stuck that in, wish I hadnt now

Yeah we were a bit disappointed with 116,000 cos we had run it in and even had it serviced at Ford. The rings went and we decided to go unleaded. I don't think having it with a 4 speed on the motorway helped.

Depending on how the engine was treated in the beginning, your engine still has a lot of life in it.

I am not sure what you mean by this, are you asking if you should avoid this engine? If you are asking if you should avoid the engine I would say you should get this van, it will be fine.

We got 140k out of a 1986 ,C reg 2.0 Pinto Tranny - that was on the original engine too, it was an ex Sweb van. The van was still going around until a few years back - I dunno if it was still on the original engine then tho!

Ah I think you mean the engine does not leak oil, and you want to service it? Or are you asking is it easy to get spare parts for the engine?

Here is one it is in english though
