Welcome to the forum! Over 22 years of running the 2L "pinto" engine, the best we have had out of an engine was 116,000 miles. This was from new though and a lot can happen in the life of the van. The problem is it may not be the original engine.
As Rover said, as long as it doesn't smoke and is serviced well they can take a lot. Even having a cam belt snap will not damage the engine, put a new one on, set the timing and off you go! They are as you say 'puncture proof' (we say bomb proof), or at least as good as an engine will get. Remember the Mk2 transit engine is not made for unleaded (sans plomb) petrol though, so if there is smoke on start up that passes as the engine warms up, you have valve seat wear due to not having lead going in to the engine in the petrol.
For ultimate long life, the best engine is the 2.5 DI, though this is slower and noisier. We had one of these mid 1980s engines that went on for over 400,000 (no idea of the exact mileage as it was 2nd hand when we got it!) with only cam belt changes and servicing.
Both engines are best with a later 5 speed engine (the MY75 from the Mk4/5) which is a little trouble to fit but will give you lower revs on both engines and help prolong it's life.
